Gingrich under fire on race, Freddie Mac contracts (AP)

NEWPORT, N.H. ? Working to reboot his presidential bid, Newt Gingrich is on the defensive in New Hampshire, under fire for a remark on race and facing fresh questions about his work for mortgage giant Freddie Mac.

That's pulling Gingrich off message just as he scrambles to build momentum after a disappointing fourth-place finish in Iowa's caucuses. The former House speaker is campaigning in New Hampshire in advance of the state's Jan. 10 primary, and he's already looking toward South Carolina, hosting a telephone town hall on Friday with voters in the state that will host the first Southern primary.

Gingrich came to New Hampshire with a singular mission: contrast himself with Republican front-runner Mitt Romney to undercut the former Massachussetts governor's conservative credentials while casting himself as the bold heir to Ronald Reagan. Instead, as he appeared at a gun manufacturer in Newport, N.H., reporters battered him with questions far off his script.

Gingrich drew a harsh rebuke from the NAACP and the National Urban League for a comment on Thursday at a senior citizen center in Plymouth, N.H., linking food stamps and African-Americans.

"Now there's no neighborhood I know of in America where, if you went around and asked people would you rather your children have food stamps or paychecks, you wouldn't have a majority saying they'd rather have paychecks," Gingrich said.

He has routinely criticized President Barack Obama as a "food stamp president" while predicting he would be a "paycheck president." He has also said in the past that, in a move toward inclusiveness, he'd attend the NAACP convention if he were invited. On Thursday at the senior citizen center, he merged those points.

"And so I'm prepared, if the NAACP invites me, I'll go to their convention to talk about why the African-American community should demand pay checks and not be satisfied with food stamps."

The remark trickled out in blogs Thursday and rapidly picked up steam. On Friday, Benjamin Jealous, head of the NAACP, issued a statement blasting Gingrich.

"It is a shame that the former speaker feels that these types of inaccurate, divisive statements are in any way helpful to our country," Jealous said.

Jealous also said Gingrich had been asked to attend the NAACP convention when he was House speaker and declined.

Marc Morial, of the National Urban League, called Gingrich's comment insulting and accused him of "dredging up the discredited racial stereotypes of the past."

Federal data shows that the majority of people using food stamps are not African-American. Gingrich's critics say he was perpetuating a stereotype that blacks rely heavily on government help.

Still, Gingrich wasn't backing down Friday, saying his words had been subjected to a "grotesque reinterpretation."

"I think you'd have to be nuts to read those two paragraphs and conclude anything except that I was saying that ... every young American deserves a chance to have a job. Every neighborhood deserves a chance to have paychecks instead of food stamps," he said.

Gingrich also faced questions Friday over whether he would release contracts with Freddie Mac, which he says earned two of his companies more than $1.6 million over eight years. He said he only pocketed about $35,000 a year himself.

Gingrich said he is "perfectly happy" to make his contracts with the mortgage giant public but the decision must be made by lawyers for the Center for Health Transformation, which he founded.

"I don't have any control over that," he said. "Because I don't work there, I don't own it, it's not my company."

There was no immediate comment from the Atlanta-based Center for Health Transformation about whether they would release the contracts.

Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond said Gingrich sold his interests in the Center for Health Transformation in May 2010 as he prepared to enter the presidential race.

Gingrich's work for Freddie Mac has come under scrutiny because of its role in the housing meltdown. The former Georgia congressman was routinely quizzed about it at town halls across Iowa, where he was pounded by a barrage of negative advertisements.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Speculations

In 2011, Samsung released powerful smartphones designed for different users and for different purposes.

It released the Galaxy Mini, designed for entry-level smartphones users, which is cost-effective yet provides great performance?for a starter. For someone who has extra budget, there was the Galaxy Ace, which offers greater capacity than the Mini and has the protective capacity of?the Gorilla Glass technology.

Then Galaxy SL was released with an 1GHz processor and big screen which is durable as well. Within the same year, the South Korean electronics giant also released the Galaxy S2, Galaxy Nexus, and Galaxy Note which all offered great performance, durability, latest software and capabilities, which is also a hybrid of a smartphone and tablet PC.

For 2012, there are speculations that the successor of Galaxy S2 will be released - the Galaxy S3. It is expected to be far more superior and powerful?than all of its Galaxy relatives especially against the Nexus.

The technical specifications of the new android smartphones are still subject to changes but some of the?information has been leaked.

Like us on Facebook

The Galaxy S3 reportedly will have the Exynos 4412 1.8GHz Quadcore processor which would offer 50 per cent more performance but use 30 per cent less power?consumption than the Tegra which is being used by other brands. It could also be packed with 2GB of RAM with 32GB internal memory, 12MP rear camera and 8MP front-facing camera with the latest technology, plus the rumoured addition of 3D properties which is growing rapidly in use.

Its operating system is the Android 4.0 or the Ice Cream Sandwich which will provide owners all access to the technology of this Android. However, it is not only Google which will power this new Galaxy model, but Samsung will also add new technologies on this smartphone.

It remains to be seen if the S3 would become a flagship to both Google and Samsung as the Best Smartphone OS and the Best Smartphone carrier, respectively.

For now it can only be compared against its predecessor and but later it could be compared with similar devices from rival phone manufacturers once it has been launched

.

The Galaxy Nexus is still its close opponent in the market despite both models being manufactured by Samsung. The Nexus has a 4.65-inch body which is very close to the size of the Galaxy Note, which measures 5.3?inches. It is co-produced with Google and is very compatible with ICS Android.

The Galaxy S3 will be?manufactured by Samsung solely. It will be a test if the new model would be capable of delivering more function and capacity than the Nexus.

Next to the Nexus is the Galaxy S2, although by technical specs, this predecessor will not win, but the challenge is would it be worth the?price to buy the S3 if owners can get half the function from S2? Galaxy S3 must have significant changes aside from the hardware to have a noticeably different performance versus the S2.

Another one is the Galaxy Note. Distinctively, the Note is a combination of a smartphone function and that of a tablet?computer. The Galaxy S3 will be comparable in terms of live editing, crisp picture and video detail, great?connectivity and business functions against the Galaxy Note. The two, though, should remain different from each other as the Galaxy?Note is the middle line between phones and tablets.

Last is the IOS. The iPhone 4s has threatened the Galaxy S2 and Galaxy Nexus with its popular virtual?assistant, the Siri. For phone users who are too busy to search or just like to ask, this virtual assistant may actually help with a lot of topics?and in a lot of ways. However, not all countries yet are supported with its full function. One example is the?navigation locally, but still Siri has an edge in that area.?

Galaxy S3 is not expected to have something that other smartphones won't have, but it could offer a better virtual assistant, better technology in?synchronization or a surprise function that the IOS and Windows Mobile cannot do on their systems.

New York archbishop "humbled" at being named cardinal (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? A "humbled" Archbishop Timothy Dolan said on Friday his elevation to cardinal by Pope Benedict is more of an honor for New York than for himself.

One of 22 newly named cardinals from around the world, Dolan was the only one representing an Archdiocese in the United States. One other American, the former archbishop of Baltimore, Edwin O'Brien, who heads the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, was also promoted.

Dolan's elevation means that New York will have a cardinal for the first time since 2009, when Edward Cardinal Egan stepped down.

Eighteen of the new cardinals including Dolan, 61, are under 80, young enough to be eligible to enter a secret conclave of cardinals that will choose the next pope after Benedict dies.

"Yes, I'm honored, humbled and grateful. But let's be frank. This is not about Timothy Dolan. This is an honor from the Holy Father to the archdiocese of New York," Dolan told a news conference after morning Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral.

"It's almost as if Pope Benedict XVI is putting the red hat of the cardinal on the top of the Empire State Building or upon the Statue of Liberty or home plate at Yankee Stadium or on the spires of this great St. Patrick's Cathedral," Dolan said.

The Archdiocese of New York, with some 2.6 million members, has been at the center of heated policy battles within the U.S. Roman Catholic community, particularly in the 1980s and '90s over the church's position on homosexuality and AIDS education.

By being named cardinal, Dolan follows in the footsteps of his predecessors, including Edward Cardinal Egan, John Cardinal O'Connor, Terence Cardinal Cooke and Francis Cardinal Spellman, all of whom were elevated to cardinal.

Dolan was named archbishop of New York in 2009 after serving as the archbishop of Milwaukee.

Texas radio station sets country music standard

On this day in 1923, radio station WBAP in Fort Worth established the basic format for country music variety show broadcasting (a format subsequently taken over by Nashville's "Grand Ole Opry" and Chicago's "National Barn Dance") with a program that featured a fiddler, a square-dance caller, and Confederate veteran Capt. M. J. Bonner. The familiar m?lange of wisecracks, music both lugubrious and jolly, and country costumes became immensely popular all across the nation. WBAP, established by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram under Amon G. Carter in 1922, was looking for its programing forte. Under call letters derived from the words "We Bring A Program," the station was an innovator in Texas radio. In addition to its "hayride" program, it featured the Light Crust Doughboys, legendary fiddler Eck Robertson, crossover musician Al Stricklin (who began as a jazz pianist and joined the Bob Wills Fiddle Band), and other country stars. But it also had its own "serious" studio orchestra in which such musicians as Don Gillis played. WBAP and the other leading Texas radio stations broke the ground in the 1920s and 1930s for a flourishing music industry.
