Angels scout ejected watching Giants practice

(AP) ? San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy apparently thought a rival scout was getting too much of a good look at his team.

At Bochy's request, a scout for the Los Angeles Angels who was watching the Giants take infield practice Wednesday morning was ejected from Scottsdale Stadium.

"I don't think it's the time for scouts to be there," Bochy said.

"They have a job to do, I understand that," he said. "There were a couple of things we wanted to work on."

Media reports said Angels scout Jeff Schugel was taking notes during the Giants' routine drills when he was told to leave the ballpark.

"It was 10 a.m. and I was just doing my job, watching infield practice and grading arms," Schugel said, according to CSNBayArea.com.

"The next thing you know, an usher told me I couldn't be there. I thought he was joking," he said.

Schugel didn't immediately leave. He walked down the first base line and sat in the stands before being escorted from the park.

"In 25 years, I've never had that happen to me," Schugel said.

Schugel was back at the stadium for the Rockies-Giants exhibition game, and he laughed about the episode while eating lunch.

Angels spokesman Tim Mead said the scout can go back to the field Thursday.

"Once a workout starts, a scout can watch," he said. "It was a miscommunication."

Earlier this spring, Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson had scouts removed while they were watching drills at Arizona's camp.

Amazon App Store hits v2.2.0 with new notification settings, improved app compatibility checks

Amazon App Store v2.2.0

It's been a while since the last Amazon App Store update was pushed out and it seems Amazon has been working on some improvements in that time. The latest update pushes the Amazon App Store into v2.2.0 and brings some welcomed changes with it aside from the usual bug fixes and stability improvements:

  • New notifications settings: Enable or disable notifications for - Download and Installation, App updates, Status Bar.
  • Improved messaging regarding payment options.
  • Improved app compatibility checks.

Overall a decent update, especially to the notification system that more or less harassed you each and every second until you attended to them. Plus, app compatibility checks will hopefully help against wasting your time in downloading an app that simply won't work for your device. The update is live now, so go ahead and check for updates or hit the source link to head on over to Amazon and grab the download.

NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES | Dayton's Bluff Seniors Living at Home ...

March 05, 2012

The Dayton?s Bluff Seniors (DBS) Living at Home/Block Nurse program began in 2008 in partnership with the University of Minnesota.? Our mission is to serve the community with health-related care to the elderly and the disabled.? From a base office in the First Lutheran School at 8th Street and Maria Avenue,? efforts focus on helping aging Dayton?s Bluff residents to live independently while remaining in their own homes as long as possible.? The program initially supports elder independence through education to seniors and related care providers in the areas of in-home safety, with special emphasis on fall prevention.? Referrals come from family members, clinics, clients, and community service providers such as Senior Linkage and Merrick Community Services.? DBS nursing staff then makes home visits to determine the individual?s needs for specific safety and care resulting in recommendations for services and support

Dayton?s Bluff Seniors has established several ongoing programs to assist needy seniors and the disabled who live in the Dayton?s Bluff Area.? The five main programs include the ?Love Grows Here? Wellness Center, the Parkway Gardens Wellness Center, Project Awareness, Project Destination; and the recently added Wilson Hi-Rise Wellness Center.

  • Love Grows Here Wellness Center ? The Center is a collaborative of three community partners: First Lutheran Church, Metropolitan State University, and Dayton?s Bluff Seniors.? At this Center participants learn the importance of wellness as it pertains to mind, body, and spirit through the use of alternative and traditional methods of pain and stress relief.? Services offered include, but are not limited to the following: blood pressure checks, healing touch therapy/ Reki healings, chronic disease care, health education, nutritional education, medical triage and referrals, foot care, and community suppers.? The intention of the Center is to support community members who may not be able to afford these services while training future community health care providers.? For the uninsured and under-insured we desire to offer a community wellness model to support the transition from a life of homelessness and vulnerability to one of stability and safety. ?
  • Parkway Gardens Wellness Center ? This Center provides a safe and confidential place where seniors can learn to monitor their health and obtain advocacy, coaching, and referrals when needed.
  • Project Awareness ? This project provides senior healthcare and disease prevention education, and available resources and policy education.? The goal is to educate the community, seniors, healthcare workers, and politicians about healthcare issues, needs, and overall economic and social benefits to families and the community alike.
  • Project Destination ? Utilizing a broad base of DBS community volunteers this project provides seniors with transportation to and from doctor appointments, grocery stores, and various recreational opportunities.
  • Wilson Hi-Rise Wellness Center ? This new Center comprises a clinic set up within Saint Paul Public Housing at1300 Wilson Ave.? As an effective partnership with theUniversity ofMinnesota DBS brings foot care and wellness monitoring to the residents in the building while providing valuable training for the nursing students assigned to participate.

China calls for boost in domestic consumption

(AP) ? China's premier on Monday called for a boost in domestic consumption to keep China's economy expanding while overseas markets remain weak.

In a speech to open the annual National People's Congress, Premier Wen Jiabao said the government planned growth of 7.5 percent this year ? a target below previous goals. The government wants a slightly slower pace of growth as it tries to rebalance the world's second-largest economy.

Wen said boosting domestic consumption is "crucial" to China's future.

He said the government will boost spending on social services and raise incomes for middle- and low-income groups, as well as expand consumer credit.

He also said subsidies for agriculture would be boosted. Just under 50 percent of China's 1.3 billion people live in rural areas that are dependent on agriculture. More tuition assistance would be provided for rural students.

Wen's report outlining priorities for 2012 is China's "state of the nation" address and opens 10 days of meetings for nearly 3,000 delegates in the Great Hall of the People in central Beijing.

The meeting comes amid not only economic concerns but a challenging leadership transition. The congress is expected to be the scene of behind-the-scenes political bargaining as President Hu Jintao and the most senior Communist Party leaders begin stepping aside this fall ? after a decade in power ? to make way for a younger generation.

The United States' efforts to expand its influence in Beijing's Asia-Pacific backyard also has China's attention. The country announced a defense spending boost Sunday.

China's economy grew by 9.2 percent last year, down from 10.3 percent in 2010, and many local governments are wracked with debt. In addition, with Europe in crisis and the U.S. recovery fragile, demand for Chinese exports is weakening.

"I wish to stress that in setting a slightly lower GDP growth rate, we hope ... to guide people in all sectors to focus their work on accelerating the transformation of the pattern of economic development and making economic development more sustainable and efficient," Wen said.

He said China was targeting an increase of central and local government spending of 14.1 percent over last year, totaling 12.4 trillion yuan ($1.97 trillion), of which slightly more than half would be central government spending.

Wen said that industrialization, urbanization and agricultural modernization will help "create huge potential demand."

He said China will target government waste by imposing limits on official overseas trips and official vehicles, both huge drains on local government budgets. In addition, leading officials will be prohibited from interfering in economic activities such as government procurement, awarding government contracts and the optioning of land and mineral rights. Government land grabs are the cause of tens of thousands of protests every year in China.

Wen alluded to the ethnic protests and violence China has been wracked with in recent years, especially in Tibetan areas and the far west Xinjiang region.

"China is a unified multiethnic country," he said. "Only when its ethnic groups are united as one and work for the development of all can China achieve prosperity."

New England Pet Hospice: Death is Not a Dirty Word

???? For as long as we have records, people have been afraid of dying ? partly because we didn?t have good pain strategies and partly because many feared the unknown or their own beliefs about what comes after death.?

???? But it has only been in the last 100 years that the dying process itself? has become so foreign and invisible to us that the unknown about the dying process causes us so much fear and anxiety.

???? Less than 100 years ago 80% of all people died in their own homes, the average life expectancy was 50 years and the infant mortality rate was 24 times higher than today: more than 16% of children died before their first birthday.? People may not have liked it, but they were very familiar with death and the dying process.? Parents knew the anguish of losing a child; children witnessed the decline and death not only of grandparents, but also of siblings and parents; and the primary caretakers through illness and death were close family members in the home.

???? Today, almost 70% of people die in institutions (hospitals and nursing homes) and the average life expectancy is close to 80 years.? We do not witness or participate in the dying process often in our lifetimes.

???? Dying has become a mystery to us and the rituals we once had of washing the body, preparing for burial and the burial itself have been transferred into the hands of strangers.

???? In addition, medicine has come so far that we expect it to prevent death, stop the aging process and keep us eternally happy, healthy, comfortable and young.? Aging and death are seen as failures of the medical community and our own will.

???? Death has become a dirty word.

???? We are awkward around the dying and bereaved.? We don?t know what to do or say.? We avoid witnessing dying and prefer that others do not discuss it.

???? But we are making a big mistake.

???? Death comes to all of us and everyone we know and love at some point.? Our ostrich approach to dying benefits no one, least of all ourselves and our children.

???? Those who have witnessed the peaceful? death of a loved one ? human or animal ? are? universally transformed in any number of ways, almost always in a positive way.? Most feel a deeper and stronger connection to the one who has passed, a reduction in anxiety about dying ourselves, an appreciation of the beauty and gift that is our own lives and the lives of those we love, and a peace within.

???? There are times when it is not possible to care for your loved ones at home, and some occasions where there is a need to be in a hospital, but there are many times when there is a choice whether to care for our own at home, allow others to care for them somewhere else, or hide from death altogether by ignoring the situation.? In the animal world, we are also often faced with the choice of euthanasia.

??? Not every situation allows for hospice-assisted natural death at home, but if the opportunity were there, would you have the courage to try?? Would you be able to overcome your fear of death and isolation from the dying process to take that leap of faith?? Could you trust yourself, your knowledge, your skills, your instincts, and most of all your compassion enough to be that loving family caretaker?

???? We think you can.? We believe in you.? And we know, no matter what comes,? you will never regret trying.

???? Death is not a dirty word.? Take that leap of faith.
