How to fix login problems with the iMore Forums app

How to fix login problems with the iMore Forums app

Yesterday we launched the highly anticipated iMore Forums app, and while we've gotten tons of great feedback on it, we've also had a few users who experienced problems logging in. We immediately deployed the crack forum commandos and code curing ninjas to look into it, and the good news is, we've got it licked.

Don't ask me to explain why, because when the tech team starts talking about deep Drupal and VBulletin integration, my eyes roll back into my head and I start going through the early stages of a Scannersplosion, but it looks like a few users aren't properly synched between the two systems. That's what's causing the problem. Luckily, there's an easy way to fix it:

Head on over to your iMore user page and change your password. That should force the forums to re-synch and fix all your login issues. Apologies for the inconvenience, but it's quick, painless, and hey, a good excuse to make sure you're using a nice strong password!

Give it a try, and let me know how it works for you!

Here at Odsi we're more than a competitive online reseller of brand name tape media. We focus on all of the things that are of interest to our customers, not only in saving you money but also in saving you time.

View all articles by Mark Paul All businesses need data backups to run smoothly. Backing up your data is as essential as having security for your bank lockers. Sometimes, data and software can be worth more than millions of dollars and can cost you more than just money. Always be careful to choose your backup device. The old traditional ways of backing up data have been long gone out of the scene and if we talk of the convenient USBs; they are just too mainstream.

Moreover, these devices are not reliable for storing in large amounts of data and cannot fulfill the requirements of businesses no matter how small one is. Tape storage systems are definitely what you a business needs if it is looking for a cheap and very convenient way of backing up data quickly and efficiently.? Tape based systems are a very reliable and the best solution of storing data. They store the data on the magnetic tape and allow for the flexibility to read and write off data.

Some of you might still be wondering why you need the backup security for your data. The answer is very simple; as long as the threats of viruses exist and as long as your computer is exposed to other threats such as theft, natural disasters and hacking, you will always need backups.Sony?s new AIT 2 turbo tape media system is the enhanced version of the earlier AIT (Advanced Intelligent Tape) technology. It provides greater speed and higher capacity as compared to the previous version of its AIT tapes. The 8mm AIT format, conforming to the standards of the industry, is still there though.

AIT tapes were introduced in the mid 1996 and since then it has been proved to be an extremely high speed and mid range solution for data backups. The Sony AIT 2 turbo cartridge has a native capacity of 80 GB and this can be increased to 208 GB for the storage of compressed data. It has a remote 64 MB memory. This tape media cartridge has been built with the flash memory chip which stores directory and operational information.

This increases the speed and storage performance. Additionally, it also plays an important role in accelerating media loading and ejection time. The Sony AIT 2, TAIT2-80C turbo tape features the AME (Advanced Metal Evaporation) formulation. Pure cobalt is made to evaporate and this is then deposited directly on the film base. This gives the tape high flux magnetic density. It has also been built in with the protective layer and a durable cartridge shell to help enhance the useful life and allow long term storage.

The new AIT tapes take into account cost effectiveness and smooth scalability as the key features. Many businesses avoid using the backing up procedures thinking they might cost them a lot of money and time, but with the Sony AIT 2 turbo tape storage system this is no longer true. You can easily and quickly store your data onto these reliable tapes without any interruptions.

(AP) ? This is the convention prelude of the Republicans' dreams ? their nightmares, that is.

Mitt Romney wanted to preside over a made-for-TV gathering showcasing his economic credentials and GOP unity. Instead, he's heading to Tampa with the national debate focused on rape and abortion and with the divisions within his party ? and with running mate Paul Ryan ? on full display.

"It's a huge distraction," Saul Anuzis, a RNC member from Michigan and a top Romney backer, said of the emotional quarreling touched off by embattled Missouri Rep. Todd Akin earlier this week. "We should be talking about the economy and here we are consumed by these side issues."

Even the weather is threatening to spoil Romney's party. As Wednesday's rain pounded the arena and hotel complex where the convention is scheduled for next week, Anuzis lamented the tropical storm churning toward Florida, saying that "it could cause havoc; it could be a chaotic situation from a transportation and security standpoint."

All this as a new Associated Press-GfK poll showed a neck-and-neck race between Romney and President Barack Obama just over two months before the election. Some 47 percent of registered voters say they plan to vote for Obama, while 46 percent favor Romney. That's virtually the same as last month ? and evidence that Romney didn't get a bounce of support by choosing Ryan as his vice presidential nominee.

Romney and Ryan sought to gain ground Wednesday with fresh criticism of Obama on health care in separate rallies and with a new TV ad. But Republican troubles persisted, just as the party had seemed to be moving past deep divisions between its establishment and conservative wings in the name of rallying behind its presidential nominee and beating Obama.

Instead, the ticket found itself still overshadowed by the uproar over Akin's refusal to drop out of his Senate race after causing a stir by saying that women's bodies have ways of preventing pregnancies in cases of "legitimate rape." He has apologized repeatedly and has said he misspoke, but he also has bucked calls from top Republicans ? including Romney and Ryan ? to abandon his bid.

"It's bad timing. Akin happening now sort of amplifies the whole thing," Charlie Black, a veteran GOP presidential campaign strategist and informal Romney adviser, said, referring to distractions from the campaign's economic message.

As final preparations were being made for the four-day convention, there were fears rippling through the national party that fallout from the Akin situation demonstrated weakness by the GOP leaders who are uniting behind Romney. But Black and others predicted that the national conversation will shift back to the economy ? and an unemployment rate above 8 percent ? by the time Romney accepts the nomination Aug. 30, and certainly by this fall.

"I can't imagine Obama running ads in suburban Pennsylvania in October tying Mitt Romney to Todd Akin," said Black. "If he does, it means we're winning."

For now at least, Akin's comments have caused a furor in the Republican Party just as it's trying to narrow the advantage Obama and the Democrats have among women voters. And the debate has highlighted fissures within the GOP over when abortion should be legal. Romney does not oppose abortion in cases of rape and incest or if it will save a mother's life, while Ryan does oppose abortion in cases of rape and incest.

Underscoring the split, the Republican National Committee is including support in its draft platform for an outright ban on abortion in all cases.

Ryan himself stoked the debate Wednesday when he was forced to emphasize anew that Romney is the nominee, brushing aside differences in their records.

"I'm proud of my pro-life record. And I stand by my pro-life record in Congress. It's something I'm proud of. But Mitt Romney is the top of the ticket and Mitt Romney will be president and he will set the policy of the Romney administration," Ryan told a Pennsylvania TV station.

He also defended a bill he cosponsored in the House to ban federal funding for abortion except in cases of incest and "forcible" rape. That language, which was eventually changed, would have narrowed the exception for rape victims. Akin and 225 other members of the House, including 11 Democrats, also cosponsored the bill.

Romney's campaign rejected the idea that the Akin issue was overshadowing the party's effort to stir enthusiasm in its base membership. And advisers said they weren't worried that Missouri, a state Obama carried in 2008 but that polls show drifting back into GOP hands, would suddenly become competitive when it's long been considered a state Romney was virtually assured of winning.

But Akin's refusal to quit his race gave rise to GOP fears in other states. Senate GOP officials were deeply concerned that the Missouri congressman might be jeopardizing the party's chances of winning control the 100-seat chamber in a close-fought year. Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill, finishing her first term, was considered the Senate's most vulnerable Democrat until Akin's remarks this week.

Democrats were working to use Akin to go after Republicans at all levels.

"It's not just one extreme candidate in Missouri; it's part of a Republican pattern," says an ad supporting Massachusetts Democrat Elizabeth Warren in her Senate race against Republican Sen. Scott Brown. Brown is urging Akin to step aside.

There were other issues beyond Akin and abortion threatening Romney's convention.

The RNC's platform committee has adopted budget language similar to Ryan's House federal spending blueprint, which calls for turning Medicare into a voucher system. That issue again spotlights the differences between the two Republicans, and splits in the party.

At the same time, Democrats were making plans to try to steal some of the limelight from Romney next week.

Obama has arranged to campaign in Iowa, Colorado and Virginia. Biden is planning to campaign in Florida ? including in Tampa ? early next week, and Michelle Obama is to appear on David Letterman's show on Aug. 29, the third day of the GOP convention.

And there is one thing completely out of Romney's control: Tropical Storm Isaac is bearing down on Florida, threatening to reach the Tampa area just as thousands of people are pouring into Tampa.

Convention officials say contingency plans are in place should the storm stay on its course for Tampa. They are monitoring the storm but not yet contacting delegates about alternate plans.

Russia joins WTO after 18 years

Russia on Wednesday crowned a tortuous 18-year campaign by becoming the largest country outside the World Trade Organization (WTO) to formally join the world's premier free trade club.

The Geneva-based institution's 156th member had spent years harbouring deep suspicions about what a flood of better Western products and services might do to the country's fitful recover from its late Soviet malaise.

President Vladimir Putin signed on July 21 the final accession document approved by all WTO countries -- a final step clearing the way for Wednesday's formal entry -- after once saying that the group needed Russia more than the reverse.

Membership came for Russia and its $2 trillion economy on the same day that the remote Pacific island nation of Vanuatu became the latest minnow nation to enter an organisation that already enlists almost all of the developed world.

Vanuatu formally grabbed the 157th seat at the trade negotiating table.

"Both accessions show that joining the WTO remains high on the countries' agendas since trade can bring a predictable and stable basis for economic growth," WTO Director General Pascal Lamy said in a statement.

"Joining the WTO is a sign of confidence in the organisation and in what it can deliver for its members", Lamy added.

Russia will now finish bringing down trade barriers to levels agreed in the negotiations while gaining broader access to foreign markets and benefiting from a more efficient business environment that should help stimulate growth.

Economists call this a best-case scenario that looks likely to apply to Russia in the years to come.

"This is a great stimulus for developing the economy and competition," Russia's veteran former finance minister Alexei Kudrin wrote on his Twitter account.

The more optimistic economists believe membership should finally give Russia the vote of confidence it needs from major investors who now shy away from dealing with its heavy bureaucracy and legacy of corrupt courts.

Moscow's Renaissance Capital estimated the long-term benefit of WTO membership to Russia's economy at an 11 percent gain in gross domestic product.

"Accession into international institutions such as the WTO lends Russia the credibility it needs to shore up the country's investment environment," it said in a special report.

But Renaissance Capital stressed that it was now up to Russian officials to take the next step of actually cutting through the red tape and keeping businesses' competitive spirits flowing.

"Big step in the right direction? Yes, but only if Russia makes the most of it," the bank said.

Three religions meet in suburban Paris prayer space

BUSSY-SAINT-GEORGES, France (Reuters) - Chief Abbess Manchen Shih gazed through a first-floor window of her vast wood and concrete temple as shaven-headed nuns in mustard robes prepared for midday prayers, cooking rice as an offering to the Buddha.

"Look! You can see the mosque and the Laotian temple," she said, gesturing at two half-finished buildings rising from a weed-ridden site in Bussy-Saint-Georges, 30 km (20 miles) east of Paris.

Like many of the new towns that have sprung up since the 1960s to ease urban overcrowding, more than half of Bussy's 25,000 residents are immigrants. Local mayor Hugues Rondeau says around 40 percent of the town's population is Asian.

With France - a secular nation with a long Roman Catholic history - battling to come to terms with its increasingly multicultural identity, Rondeau believes Bussy can set an example.

Worried by a dearth of prayer space for non-Catholics, he is breaking new ground by placing a synagogue, a mosque and two Buddhist temples side by side in a bid to tear down barriers between the faiths. Bussy already has a Catholic church.

"My concern was that if we don't provide some better organization for the religions, we could end up with anarchy and people praying in the streets," Rondeau, a practicing Catholic, told Reuters.

France, a nation of 60 million people, is home to Europe's largest Muslim and Jewish minorities, estimated at about 5 million and half a million respectively. They rub shoulders with about one million Buddhists, many of them immigrants from France's former east Asian colonies.

That has led to tensions. More than 100 anti-Muslim attacks and as many as 400 anti-Jewish acts are reported each year, ranging from threats and desecration of graveyards to violence.

The shooting of three Jewish children and four adults by 23-year-old Mohamed Merah in March - France's first domestic al Qaeda-inspired killings - has prompted calls for more inter-faith dialogue.

While Bussy has no history of violence, Rondeau fears it may not be immune and he recognizes that the project - where the mosque and the synagogue directly face each other - is a gamble.

"If tomorrow the rabbi assassinates the imam, or vice-versa, because of tensions in the Middle East, I would certainly be responsible. But I would also be responsible if they decide to hold peaceful talks together," the centre-right mayor said.

LACK OF PRAYER SPACES

It is a first in France where a strict 1905 law on the separation of church and state has made public officials reluctant to intervene in religious affairs.

Rondeau emphasizes that, while he asked public authorities to reserve a plot of land close to the city centre for the site, construction is entirely funded by religious communities, which have enthusiastically embraced the scheme.

Abbess Shih's box-shaped temple, the European headquarters of the Taiwan-based Fo Guang Shan Buddhist order, opened in July. A Laotian temple and a green-and-beige mosque should be ready by December with the synagogue due to complete the space in 2014.

"Our Grand Master asks us to be in harmony with ourselves, with others, with society and with the world so I think it's good that we're all neighbors," says Shih.

Islamic leaders hope the project can foster harmony after tensions flared in September when the previous conservative government banned street prayers.

The sight of hundreds of Muslims worshipping in the streets of northern Paris had stirred unease in a country where public displays of faith are frowned up - prompting far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen to brand it an "invasion" - but Muslims complain there are not enough mosques.

"This is a great initiative," Abdallah Zekri, president of the Observatory against Islamophobia within the French Muslim Council. "It could reinforce the spirit of living together and allow moments to be shared. I see that as positive."

Rondeau says Bussy's immigrant population makes it the perfect laboratory for promoting interreligious relations but he admits that many local people remain opposed.

"It's not always easy, considering the image of Islam in Europe, and especially in France", he said. "It's always hard for people to understand that the cultural and even ethnic landscape of Europe is changing."

According to Mehdi, a 23-year-old delivery man who lives in Bussy, the town was flooded with anonymous tracts opposing the mosque. "Muslims have been labeled for a long time," he said. "This project won't change it but at least we'll pray in better conditions."

Many French people are openly alarmed by the changing identity of their country. The National Front won 18 percent of the vote in April's presidential first-round election, drawing on frustration at high unemployment and immigration.

Some Bussy residents voiced fears that supporting minority religions could foster the growth of ghettos in the town.

"It's very democratic but I don't want people to be ostentatious and start walking around town wearing djellabas", said David Moreau, a 41-year-old Christian, smoking a cigarette while taking a break from his insurance job. "I don't walk around with a cross around my neck."

SYMBOLIC MINARET

To defuse concerns, Rondeau asked each community to build contemporary structures that would not look out of place in the new town. The mosque was, for instance, designed with a symbolic minaret discreetly attached to the main building.

He hopes the site will eventually feature an Armenian cultural centre, a Chinese evangelical church, classrooms and libraries where people can learn about the different faiths.

Every religious building will have its own cultural area. Visitors to the Taiwanese Buddhist temple will be able to learn Mandarin or attend a tea ceremony while the mosque will offer classes in Muslim civilization and Arabic.

One lawmaker for France's conservative UMP opposition party, which banned the wearing of full-face veils while in office, questioned the scheme's usefulness.

"This project seems laudable but rather utopian," said Jacques Myard, an outspoken supporter of the veil ban. "Geographical proximity will not create intellectual closeness so it's largely illusory."

For Odon Vallet, an historian of religion, there is little chance that putting religions side by side will automatically favor a dialogue that is already in retreat due to the economic crisis and rising unemployment.

Some residents were more pessimistic, fearing that proximity could create tensions. "At first, I thought it was fun", said Claude Tshilombo, a 42-year-old nurse. "But now, I think it's a time bomb."
