Syrian violence threatens ancient treasures

Reuters file

People shop at the main market, or souk, in the Syrian city of Aleppo.

By Reuters

AMMAN ? Syrian museums have locked away thousands of ancient treasures to protect them from looting and violence but one of humanity's greatest cultural heritages remains in grave peril, the archaeologist charged with their protection said.

Aleppo's medieval covered market has already been gutted by fires which also ripped through the city's Umayyad mosque. Illegal excavations have threatened tombs in the desert town of Palmyra and the Bronze Age settlement of Ebla, and Interpol is hunting a 2,700-year-old statue taken from the city of Hama.

In a country which also boasts stunning Crusader castles, Roman ruins and a history stretching back through the great empires of the Middle East to the dawn of human civilization, the task of safeguarding that heritage from modern conflict is a daunting responsibility.

Maamoun Abdulkarim, head of Syria's antiquities and museums, says it is a battle for the nation's very existence.

"We emptied Syria's museums. They are in effect empty halls, with the exception of large pieces that are difficult to move," Abdulkarim told Reuters during a visit to neighboring Jordan.

Tens of thousands of artifacts spanning 10,000 years of history were removed to specialist warehouses to avoid a repeat of the storming of Baghdad's museum by looters a decade ago, in the wake of the U.S. invasion and overthrow of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, he said.

Syria's own 23-month-old conflict is tearing the country apart and has raised international concerns over the fate of one of the richest and most diverse historical collections of any single nation.

The UN cultural body UNESCO says it is concerned for the fate of six World Heritage sites including the old cities of Damascus, Aleppo and Bosra and the imposing Crusader castle, Crac des Chevaliers.

Many have become battlegrounds between rebels taking cover among ruins and troops who shell indiscriminately, the damage recorded in relentless video images of the fighting.

If looters ever got their hands on the museum treasures, that would mark the final demise of Syria, Abdulkarim said.

"If they reach these places then my conviction is that Syria would no longer exist... It would signal the end of the end," said the 46-year-old French-educated archaeology professor who took over as Syria's Director General of Antiquities and Museums six months ago. "Syria as we know it would then be over."

Bronze statue
Numerous Bronze Age civilizations left successive marks on Syria including Babylonians, Assyrians, and Hittites. They in turn were replaced by Greeks, Sassanians, Persians, Romans and Arabs, many choosing Syrian cities for their capitals.

European Crusaders left impressive castles and the Ottoman Empire also made its mark over five centuries.

Abdulkarim said the most significant pieces to go missing since the start of the conflict were a gilt bronze statue from around 2,000 years ago that was stolen from the city of Hama ? and placed on Interpol's 'Most Wanted' list of art works a year ago - and a marble piece looted from the garden of Apamea museum.

But priceless artifacts in the northern town of Maarat al-Noman were saved when the local community ensured the museum's famous mosaic portals were kept safe during fierce clashes.

In Hama, local neighborhood youths protected the museum's Roman and Byzantine statues from looters until they were taken to safety, Abdulkarim said. "They closed the doors of the museum and were able to protect it from disaster."

Dozens of archaeological sites have been targeted by illegal excavation and trafficking, though they account for less than 1 percent of the 10,000 sites across the country, he said.

The diggers concentrate mainly on sites which have long been the focus of illicit trafficking, such as the ancient city of Apamea, north of Hama, that flourished during Roman and Byzantine periods, and is famous for its 1,850-metre colonnade.

"Vandalism in the city is an old phenomenon and is not related to the crisis, but the thieves who are active in this area have found greater freedom to operate during this crisis," Abdulkarim said.

Video footage from March last year, documented in a report by archaeologist Emma Cunliffe at Britain's Durham University, also appears to show tanks stationed alongside the Apamea colonnade.

Abdulkarim appealed to the warring parties to spare the country's many Crusader castles, some of which have been in the thick of the conflict and even been converted into army barracks or rebel hideouts.

Crac des Chevaliers, the supreme example of Crusader castle building, has suffered minor damage while Aleppo citadel's main gate was sightly damaged along with its northern tower, he said.

Gutted souks
The greatest damage has been to a collection of seven old markets in Aleppo, unsurpassed in the Middle East, that were gutted by fire that also damaged the city's Great Umayyad Mosque, Abdulkarim said.

"We have lost the seven souks completely, forever," he said, although the continued fighting had prevented any mission from assessing the full extent of the structural damage.

In northeastern Syria, major ancient sites in Tell Mozan near Qazmishli were well protected by Kurdish groups that have taken control in the region, Abdulkarim said.

U.S. historian Giorgio Buccellati, who has worked at Tell Mozan and checks photos of the site daily on the Internet, told Reuters there had been "absolutely no looting" there.

In southern Syria, army shelling had damaged some ancient homes but not the ruin of Bosra, which contains one of the best preserved Roman theaters and a major monument, Abdulkarim said. His comments were confirmed by a refugee who spoke to Reuters this week after fleeing the town.

"The army had shelled the old quarter where rebels had dug in and there has been damage to an old church," Abdullah Zubi said after crossing into Jordan. But the Roman theater, in an army-controlled sector, suffered no damage although army troops are dug in nearby, he said.

The ruins of what may be the world's first city, a mound near the Syrian-Iraqi border town called Tell Brak, have so far been spared, while illegal excavation of unexplored tombs in the ancient desert city of Palmyra had halted, Abdulkarim said.

In some cases those illegal digs stopped simply because thieves failed to locate any treasures, as happened at the Bronze Age site at Ebla after they dug holes in an ancient courtyard at the royal palace.

More than 4,000 items, including beads, coins, statues and mosaic panels, were turned over by Syrian customs last year to Abdulkarim's department, although nearly a third of those turned out to be counterfeit.

The department is also working with UNESCO and Interpol to track down 18 mosaic panels smuggled to Lebanon.

Combined losses so far remained just a modest fraction of Syria's priceless collection, Abdulkarim said, but added that protracted and escalating violence could usher in anarchy and more brazen theft.

"So far the gangs and thieves are small scale operators and no organized international gangs have surfaced," he said. "But what could be terrifying is that column heads and columns and large stones could be stolen...and smuggled out of Syria."

"If this happens, God forbid, then we are approaching the start of the tragic demolition of our past and future."

SwiftKey 4 launches with Flow, personal style detection (hands-on)

SwiftKey 4 launches with Flow, personalized recommendations handson

SwiftKey has been promising its own answer to Swype ever since it launched the SwiftKey Flow beta late last year, and the company's retort is at last finished. The newly available SwiftKey 4 -- Flow is just a component here -- brings Android writers the promised gesture-based typing along with Flow Through Space, which lets users glide to the spacebar to keep typing rather than pause after every word. The upgrade also expands contextual word prediction to 60 languages, offers simpler corrections and watches for personal typing habits to adjust accordingly -- it should learn whether you're a hunt-and-peck newcomer or a seasoned pro blazing along with both thumbs. The update is free for existing users in both phone- and tablet-sized forms, and it's temporarily priced at $2 (normally $4) to lure in anyone who isn't happy with their existing input methods.

We gave the final version a spin on a Galaxy Nexus, and much of what we saw in the SwiftKey Flow beta holds true with SwiftKey 4. Anyone comfy with a gesture-based keyboard will be happy with the speed and accuracy here, especially when they don't have to lift their finger between words. However, the previous quirks remain as well: Flow Through Space tends to melt down after a few words, so you'll want to stop after "the quick brown fox" before you finish with "jumps over the lazy dog." The style recognition is harder to gauge when this author is an an experienced user who's only had a short while to teach the app any tricks, but the simplified corrections are handy for quickly polishing up a sentence. While we don't feel that SwiftKey is orchestrating a revolution with version 4, it doesn't have to -- the appeal here is not having to give up SwiftKey's generally well-regarded feel to get a feature previously reserved for competitors. It remains our go-to keyboard for those times we don't like what Google or phone designers have to offer.

SwiftKey 4 Best-Selling Android App Revolutionized with Innovative 'SwiftKey Flow' Gesture Typing

SAN FRANCISCO -- February 20, 2013 - SwiftKey 4 launches today on Google Play with smarter features that make typing on a touchscreen faster, easier and more accurate. Available now at the promo price of $1.99 and as a free upgrade for existing users, the new release features a unique take on gesture typing called SwiftKey Flow.

SwiftKey Flow combines the mind-reading capabilities of SwiftKey's personalized autocorrect engine with the speed of gliding your fingers across the screen. This revolutionary approach to continuous input begins predicting words from the moment a user touches the screen and goes on to predict their next word when they let go. A unique feature called 'Flow Through Space' also makes gesture typing more powerful than ever before by allowing users to enter entire phrases simply by gliding to the space bar between words.

SwiftKey 4 adds to everything that has made the app a bestseller since first launching in 2010. Users can still tap to type, the app constantly learns a user's style to ease the frustration of entering long words and users can further personalize predictions by granting access to their Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, SMS or blog posts.

"Everyone's had embarrassing autocorrect moments," said Ben Medlock, SwiftKey co-founder and CTO. "That's why we built SwiftKey to understand the context of words, not just their spelling. It works from the word go to adjust to you - from the phrases you write to how you touch the screen. It means you don't have to worry about typing, it does all the hard work for you."

The new features in SwiftKey 4 include:

* SwiftKey Flow - blending SwiftKey's mind-reading next-word prediction and autocorrect with the speed of gesture typing
* Flow Through Space - lets users write entire sentences in one motion without ever having to lift their finger to add a space
* Support for contextual prediction across 60 languages - with new support for Albanian, Bosnian, Javanese, Sundanese, Thai and Vietnamese, all with dynamic auto-correction and next word prediction
* Easier corrections - tap on a word and SwiftKey 4 will move the cursor to the end of the word and offer two alternatives
* Personalized typing style - whether you write inaccurately with two thumbs or more carefully using a single finger, SwiftKey 4 now automatically adapts to how users type to provide more insightful corrections and prediction

Beta versions of the app have been tested by more than 200,000 SwiftKey fans over the last 11 weeks, with more than 2.4 billion characters flowed. A No.1 best-selling app on Google Play in 38 countries, SwiftKey is available in 60 languages and counting. For more information about SwiftKey, visit www.swiftkey.net.

Filing 2012 income taxes? Five changes to watch for.

That time again: Customers waited for help on their income taxes at an H&R Block office last year in Nashville, Tenn. (Mark Humphrey/AP/File)

These deductions aren't new. The surprise is that they're still around. In the fiscal-cliff deal, Congress reinstated several expired tax breaks, if only temporarily.

One of the most important among the reinstated tax breaks is the deduction for state and local sales taxes. Tax-payers who take itemized deductions can deduct the sales taxes they pay in lieu of state and local income taxes. That might not mean much in a high-tax state like Connecticut or New Jersey. But it's a highly popular provision for residents of Texas, Florida, and other states that don't have a state income tax.

Another reinstated tax break is the deduction for mortgage insurance, typically something homeowners pay if they have made only a small down payment on their house. Two other tax breaks still holding on by their fingernails: the deduction for qualified college tuition and out-of-pocket teacher expenses. All these deductions are scheduled to disappear after 2013.

Another important deduction ? because it directly reduces the tax owed, not just one's income ? is the credit for homeowners who have installed energy-saving materials, such as insulation and energy-efficient doors and windows. The deduction allows a deduction that is a portion of the cost of materials up to a lifetime credit of $500.

One provision Congress did make permanent ? an inflation-adjusted form of the alternative minimum tax ? means that taxpayers will no longer be subjected to the yearly uncertainty of whether Washington would enact a patch to ensure the AMT would not ensnare middle-income taxpayers. "If you look over the history of the last 12 years, the number of people caught by the AMT does creep up each year, just not drastically," says Mark Luscombe, principal analyst at CCH Tax & Accounting based in Riverwoods, Ill.

Rated 3 out of 5 by I've owned Dell's for many years and the computer is great, but it came with Windows 8 and Internet Explorer 10 which I absolutely hate. I'd heard all the hoop-la about Windows 8 and figured though it was different it couldn't possibly be that difficult to work with, but boy was I wrong! On top of that, even Explorer is way different. I don't understand the logic behind Microsoft making such drastic changes that a person literally has to re-learn how to use a computer. I would NOT recommend Explorer 10 or Windows 8 to anyone who wants a computer that they can merely sit down to and be off and running right out of the box. This is painstakingly slow going and very, very frustrating. 02/10/2013

Outlaws are back with new album, energy

Published: Thu, February 14, 2013 @ 12:00 a.m.

Once an Outlaw, always an Outlaw is what singer-guitarist Henry Paul is feeling these days.

Even though he enjoyed success on his own in the Henry Paul Band and BlackHawk, the Florida native is home again with the Outlaws, which recently released its first new studio album in over a decade.

A tribute to deceased original members Hughie Thomasson, Billy Jones and Frank O?Keefe, ?It?s About Pride? finds Paul exploring the same country-rock sound that in the ?70s positioned the Outlaws alongside legendary acts Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Marshall Tucker Band.

?The passing of Hughie Thomasson, Billy Jones and Frank O?Keefe left two original members of the band, and with this group I felt like we needed to establish our own music identity,? said Paul, calling from Nashville. ?Going through the rest of the band?s career performing music from 30-plus years ago wasn?t why we got back into this. We got back into this to have an opportunity to write and record and sort of define what this band is now. We wanted to put a face to the name.?

Considering the Outlaws were known for country-rock-defining tunes such as ?There Goes Another Love Song? and ?Green Grass and High Tides,? Paul wanted the new tunes to fit the band?s classic-era mold.

?Everything that went into making the Outlaws a great band early on made this record as good as anything we?ve ever done,? Paul said. ?The songwriting is exceptional. There are 12 really good songs on the record, and the performance is blistering. It?s all there ? guitars, vocals, songs, energy. There?s an old saying: For those who understand it, there?s no explanation needed. And for those who don?t get it, there is no explanation that will work. If you ask an Outlaw fan, they will tell you these songs don?t disappoint.?

Among the highlights are the new album?s title track and also ?Hidin? Out in Tennessee.? Critics apparently have agreed, putting the new effort on many best of 2012 album lists. Now the Outlaws are hitting the road in its support. This includes a return to Youngstown for a Saturday show at The Cellar.

Paul said he remembers playing the intimate venue a few years ago. He said it?s sort of a full circle experience for the Outlaws. While the band reached great heights, even headlining Madison Square Garden decades ago, now it?s returned to the sweaty nightclubs to sway a new generation of fans. Next up for Outlaws is not only a live album and DVD release, but Paul hopes another chapter of success for the classic act.

?With all of that, I think you have enough relevant intellectual property to carry the band another five to 10 years down the road,? Paul said.

Four Places at Once: AWP 2013 | Ruminate Magazine

In three weeks I leave for Boston to represent Ruminate at the Association of Writers and Writing Programs Conference (table Y21). I?ve been to AWP several times?as a writer, as a fan, as a book lover who works in the book industry?but this will be the first time that I will be officially representing an organization. As I peruse the schedule in preparation for the conference, my interest is piqued by myriad sessions, and I soon realize I would need to be in four places at once in order to hit everything that calls my name.

As a writer, I love AWP for the craft talks, for the book fair?getting to meet people at literary magazines and publishers and learning about new ones?and for the networking. Writing can be a very solitary venture, so it?s great once in a while to be surrounded by your ilk. The conference is also an excellent place to light a fire in terms of your own writing life, and I have many poems that have been sparked by something said at a craft talk. Here?s what attracts me as a writer:

R205. Defining Contemporary Poetry: How Do We Know How Much is Too Much, Not Enough, or Too Little?

R252. Poetry and/as Play (with Kevin McFadden, a fellow Charlottesvillian and friend): ?Four poets will discuss ways of using play to generate material, along with the value of play in their own writing.?

S162. Courting the Love Poem: Challenges of Sincerity and Sentimentality (This is a topic I have explored in a previous Ruminate blog.)

S209. Master of None: Surviving and Thriving without an MFA

As a fan at AWP, I have attended readings of some of my favorite writers, as well as some unknown to me at the time who would later make their way onto that list. I got to see fabulous books displayed at the book fair, and bump into people I admire (literally?a friend I was with brushed arms with Billy Collins in the hallway). There are so many readings by people whose work I love, but these are the ones at the top of my list:

R264. Staggered Tellings: Immediacy, Intimacy, and Ellipses in the Verse Novel (with Rita Dove and Kevin Young, two of my favorite poets)

R270B. A Tribute to Jake Adam York (1972-2012) (I met Jake several times when I lived in Colorado, and his recent passing was a great loss to the poetry community.)

F187. Pitt Poetry Series Reading (with Richard Blanco, whose poem at the Inauguration was just wonderful)

F210. A Centenary Celebration of Muriel Rukeyser (with Galway Kinnell and Sharon Olds, two other favorites of mine)

F271. Copper Canyon Press 40th Anniversary Reading (with Michael Wiegers, C.D. Wright, Jean Valentine, Bob Hicok, Dean Young?all fabulous)

S211. Video Games, Fan Fiction, and Comics: Alternative Genres as Legitimate Literature (I have written here about graphic novels and my husband is a huge fanboy, so I find this topic fascinating)

S263. Augusten Burroughs & Cheryl Strayed: A Reading & Conversation (Two literary superstars, and for good reason. I am an especially big fan of Strayed?s work and of her as a person, having hosted her for a reading for her first book when I worked at a bookstore in Minnesota. She is just tops.)

As one who works in the publishing industry, AWP also offers much food for thought. Here?s what draws me in:

R130. Hurdles and Widgets and Dishes: The State of Literary Publishing. ?A panel of distinguished literary publishing professionals discusses the latest challenges, innovations, and intrigues facing literary publishing today.?

R176. Graywolf Press Reading (I love and admire the books that Graywolf produces. And I?m not just saying this to get in good with James Franco?but if he wants to email me, that?s cool, too.)

R209. University Presses: Not Just Poetry Anymore. (Not only do I work at a university press, but our director is also on the panel, so this one is doubly relevant for me.)

F240. Breaking Digital Ground: E-Books and Independent Literary Publishing. (I manage the ebook program at our press and am constantly learning new things about this quickly changing and evolving area. I think it?s important to stay engaged in the ebook conversation, and since I work with mostly academic titles, I?d love to hear how the literary side of publishing is dealing with ebooks.)

Finally, as a part of Ruminate, I am so looking forward to meeting writers who have appeared in our pages, as well as those who hope to be or who simply admire the magazine. As Poetry Editor, I first meet poets through their work, and I love getting to know them more when I read their bios in the magazine?s proofs. I am very proud of the work that Ruminate puts out and I think the magazine itself is a thing of beauty, so I can?t wait to talk to people about it and to pass along some of my excitement. Here are some sessions that tie in with Ruminate?s mission and operation:

R119. Religion and Stories: Heretics and Humanists Shift the Perspective. ?These writers, though not conventionally religious, use religion to explore reality?. Join them for a frank discussion of issues (creative, cultural, moral, and legal) involved when writers use what others regard as sacred to illuminate the human condition.?

R143. Odes, Psalms, and Praise Songs: A Living Tradition. Reading and discussion.

F202. Where Marketing Meets Development: Who Said Fundraising?s Not Fun? ?Representatives of renowned nonprofit literary organizations? The Writer?s Center, Lighthouse Writers, 826Boston and Grub Street?speak about the intersection of marketing and fundraising for literary organizations, and how development efforts can create community, promote an organization?s programming and services, and be innovative and fun rather than daunting.? (I think that Ruminate, as a nonprofit, does a great job of making fundraising fun while creating community, from the fabulous broadsides and other goodies it sells to the dinners and writing retreats.)

F268. The Bible, Women, and American Literature. ?Five women writers who use Bible-based themes transformatively in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction will discuss their own and others? work and invite audience discussion.?

S191. Message in a Bottle: Poetry of the Sacred and the Profane. ?What poem would you cast into the sea in a bottle?? (This panel includes Tony Hoagland, whose work I love, so I guess this could fall into the ?fan? category, too!)

S252. Because That?s the Way It?s Always Been Done: When Literary Journals Face Necessary Change. ?Literary journals must respond to changing readerships, budgetary constraints, evolving aesthetics, and limited staffing resources.?

Fortunately, I do not have to make the tough calls about which things to attend, since I will be happily manning the Ruminate table (Y21) at the AWP Bookfair. The Bookfair will be open 8:30a.m. to 6:00p.m. Thursday, March 7 through Saturday, March 9 (open to the general public on Saturday), so if you are attending please stop by and say hello! I would love to put some faces with the work I have loved reading and the work I hope to see down the road. And if you want to put the names of two Ruminate prizewinners with their faces, come by the table for signings with Jessica Wilbanks (Friday at 2:00 p.m) and Nahal Suzanne Jamir (Saturday at 10:30 a.m).

In any of the above capacities, I would definitely attend the fabulous WordFarm Press and Ruminate reading and reception on Thursday night (7:00-8:15p.m., Room 205, Level 2). Featuring Jessie van Eerden (author of the debut novel Glorybound), Nahal Suzanne Jamir, Jessica Wilbanks, and others, this is sure to be a fun night.

Are you going, too? What sessions/readings/signings are calling your name? Which table/booth will be the first one you dash to at the Bookfair? Safe travels, and see you in Boston!

the HAES? files: ?Preventing Obesity??One life story | Health At ...

by Dana Schuster, MS

Recently I saw a new advertisement for the YMCA that included the message that ?exercise may just be the best way to prevent obesity.? Now don?t get me wrong, as a Health and Fitness Instructor, and a personal consumer of regular physical activity, I am all for both exercise and the YMCA (mostly), which generally tends to be one of the more body-diverse workout environments available. However, this commercial, along with the recent New England Journal of Medicine article by David Allison, et al, on ?Myths, Presumptions, and Facts about Obesity,? got me thinking about all of those things that people promote as ways to ?prevent obesity??particularly when working with children and their families.

I firmly believe that the experience of one person should not be viewed as evidence of what is true for everyone, and yet an individual experience can well be instructive when challenging the validity of healthcare providers? and/or policy makers? claims about preventing a person from becoming fat. So I decided to do a quick review of some of the most commonly made statements I hear from the healthcare providers and education colleagues with whom I work, when they are promoting strategies to address the ?childhood obesity epidemic.?

So, here it is: Dana Schuster, case study.

I. Minimize weight gain when pregnant.
My mother was very weight conscious when pregnant with me, and while I do not know if she actually attempted to diet, I do know that she did not gain more than the recommended poundage. When I was born, I weighed in at about six and a half pounds, which was within the lower end of the healthy-baby weight range at the time.

II. Breastfeed for at least six months.
Even in the mid 1950s, when this feeding practice was not supported to the same degree as now, I know my mom did her best in this endeavor when I was an infant. Within my first year of life, I filled out so that I most resembled a miniature Michelin Man?all those lovely, cushy rolls! Yes, at the time, this was seen as a sign of ?thriving.?

III. Serve home-cooked family meals that include fresh fruits and vegetables.
I was very fortunate to grow up in a family that could afford both a stay-at-home mom and fresh produce. My mother was a good cook and a nurse by profession, who believed in lots of green veggies, non-fat milk, and nutritious food choices. She was not a supporter of candy, chips, or snacks in general, and was mostly focused on the importance of health, as opposed to physical appearance, in her feeding practices.

IV. Don?t drink sodas, as they are a major cause of obesity.
I can?t remember a time when there were sodas either in our refrigerator, or purchased to consume when we were out and about. Well, perhaps there was the occasional bottle of 7 Up or ginger ale added to a holiday punch, but other than that, I never drank sodas, nor do I like soda now. I did go through a TAB phase when I was a dieting teenager. (Maybe if we just made everyone drink this particular carbonated beverage as representative of soda, they?d give up soda drinking all on their own from taste?disgust.)

V. Do regular physical activity/exercise.
Let?s see, I rode my bike all over the hills in my safe neighborhood (a sign of privilege, to be sure) and played active hide-and-seek with my siblings and dog in the field behind our house. From age nine to fourteen, I was a competitive swimmer with several hours of practice daily. I did gymnastics in middle school and LOVED PE class. In high school, I played water polo and continued to love PE class.

Hmmm. Growing up, I was the beneficiary of five of the top ?obesity prevention? strategies currently being touted to children and their families. Time for the big reveal: I am a FAT adult.

This accounting of my personal history is not about trying to find the ?reasons? I am the size I am, but to point out that putting the spotlight on a goal of preventing obesity will leave everyone short-changed and set up for potential ?failure.? The good news for me is that most of the time growing up I didn?t have a clue that I was doing all these things so I wouldn?t get fat?I thought I was fueling my body, being strong, playing hard, and having fun.? Imagine that.

In my work with school wellness efforts, I am all for encouraging and creating opportunities for children and teens to enjoy fun daily ?recess,? drink water as a primary beverage, and eat foods that support their minds and bodies. But the focus must always be on weight-neutral skill development that facilitates our young people to learn to listen to and trust their wonderful bodies, and feel entitled to choose positive self-care?behaviors throughout their lives.

What Are The Products Being Dealt By Led Power Supplies ...

The growth and use of LED lights for domestic, commercial and industrial purposes has been quite stunning over the past few decades and there are quite a few reasons that could be attributed to it.

Whether one is on the look for good Led Tube solutions or led module, the fact that there is a sharp increase in demand for energy has made most of us look at alternate sources. Further the price at which power (hydro, thermal or alternate) is made available to us is also becoming increasingly expensive and quite prohibitive at times. This certainly has made most of us run for cover and find out alternate sources that are more affordable and sustainable over a longer period of time. This gap is now being effectively being filled by a host of Led power supplier manufacturer units and they certainly are making hay while the sun shines. Let us over the next few lines try and find out what the various other factors which could also be considered contributory to the metaphoric rise in the use of such led modules based products.

How A Led RGB Supplier Can Make A Difference

One major factor that contributes to global warming and environmental degradation is the amount of heat that is generated from the conventional modes of lighting. Here again it would be pertinent to point out that the ensuing festive season will see a dramatic increase in the use of decorative lamps not only in our country but across the world. This will certainly result in a sudden spike in the atmospheric temperature given the sheer number of such decorative lamps that will be up and running for a number of days. It is here that a good Led RGB supplier has a big role to play. RGB stands for the words Red, Green and Blue and there are some of the finest LED solutions for such festival periods. They are not only very attractive and bright to look at but they emit and generate much lesser heat when compared to the conventional decorative lighting apparatuses. The icing on the cake is again on the savings that could come the customers way because of lesser consumption of energy and power that already is becoming a scarce and limited commodity.

Choosing the right Led power supplier manufacturer is of paramount importance if you wish to deliver on your promises that you might have made to your society, country and the world at large. A good manufacturer amongst other things will have a host of products that would be able to cater to almost each and every need of the customers. Starting from Led tube to Led lights such manufacturers will have a big array of products. When we talk about such LED based products having the right Led module is also very important and this is a point which has to be kept in mind by each and everyone, including a good and reputed Led RGB supplier.

Trade Name v. Trademark

Monday, 11 February, 2013 15:00 Written by Tyler M. Hampy

?

By: Tyler Hampy

Is a ?trade name? the same thing as a ?trademark?? This is a topic that seems to give people trouble. The Lanham Act offers some help to distinguish the terms. By definition, a ?trade name? is any name used by a person to identify his or her business or vocation. On the other hand, ?trademark? is defined as any word, name, symbol, or device or any combination thereof used to identify and distinguish goods and to indicate the source of goods.

Modern usage restricts the term trade name to names used to distinguish companies, partnerships and businesses. A business or corporate trade name symbolizes the reputation of a company and the business it conducts. However, trade names often function as trademarks or service marks as well.top-brands[1]

As one court explained, ?[a] trade name is descriptive of the manufacturer or dealer himself and applies to a business and its good will, whereas a trademark, in a technical sense, is applicable to vendible commodities ? a trademark has reference to the thing sold while a tradename embraces both the thing sold and the individuality of the seller.?

One of the main differences between trade name and trademarks is that words, pictures and symbols used solely as trade names, as defined by the Lanham Act, can?t be federally registered as a mark. Of course, such words, pictures or symbols can be registered as trademarks or service marks if they are used in such a way to meet the definition of a trademark.

Although trade names acting solely as trade names can?t be federally registered, actions for trade name infringement can be brought under the Lanham Act. The Ninth Circuit has said that trade name infringement is based on considerations similar to trademark infringement and that both preclude one from using another?s distinctive mark or name if it will cause a likelihood of confusion or deception as to the origin of the goods.

Tips For Successful Commercial Real Estate Management | National ...

TIP! Carefully peruse the disclosure statements issued by the real estate agency you intend to hire. Look for any disclosures regarding dual agency.

Whenever you invest, you need to know the type of property that is best suited to your needs. Define your sphere of interest prior to beginning your search. Making a bad decision at this stage could cost you a lot. Keep reading for a handful of ideas and advice for making more informed commercial real estate decisions.

TIP! Check into having an inspector look through your property before you put that property back on the market. If there is anything wrong with your property, have it fixed right away.

When you are buying or selling commercial real estate, always negotiate. It is important that your concerns and opinions are heard and recognized by the other parties; you must always put forth the effort to ensure fair pricing for the commercial property.

Real Estate

TIP! Commercial real estate agents specialize in working with different types of clients. Agents that work with tenants and landlords both are called full service brokers.

Hire a qualified commercial real estate attorney to avoid legal problems later. Because real estate investing is full of unexpected pitfalls and setbacks, you need a savvy professional to cover your legal liabilities.

TIP! Take the neighborhood into account when purchasing commercial property. Purchasing in neighborhoods that are in the upper price per square foot range will help for successful business because the surrounding owners have more money to spend.

When you interview a representative of a prospective real estate brokerage, ask how the company attains most of its profits. They should be up front about what their business model is and any interests that differ from yours. Make sure you understand how they are going to benefit from the transaction that they will take care of for you.

TIP! Don?t underestimate the value of networking with other investors or with private lenders when trying to purchase commercial real estate. The more people in your real estate network, the more likely you are to find opportunities to buy.

Have an understanding on what exactly it is you are looking for when it comes to commercial real estate. Write down the things you like about the property, important features are office numbers, how many conference rooms, restrooms, and how big it is.

TIP! Standard lease forms should not be signed lightly. Larger companies can sometimes slip extra requirements into lease documents, and this can make them longer and more complicated.

If you are considering apartment complexes as your next investment, remember that smaller complexes may be more trouble than they are worth. In fact, many experienced investors recommend only investing in properties with 10 or more units. This general advice may not always apply though. You should decide on buying a property based on your own research.

Commercial Real Estate

TIP! Visit the commercial real estate properties that you are interested in. Bring a contractor along so that you don?t forget to inspect any important features.

As indicated by this article, commercial real estate investments can be lucrative. The three requirements to success in commercial real estate are knowledge, skill and some luck. Not all individuals are destined for success, but with the application of the aforementioned advice, your odds of victory are higher than they would?ve been otherwise.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Futures are following overseas markets higher and U.S. indexes could be heading for new multi-year highs.

Dow Jones industrial futures are up 29 points to 13,955. The broader S&P futures have added 3.3 points to 1,515.70. Nasdaq futures are up 5.5 points to 2,777.50.

The Standard and Poor's 500 hit a five-year high Friday and it appears set to reach for new heights Monday.

The Dow, after breaking the 14,000 barrier on Feb. 1, may near those levels again.

Europe is still a worry and Central Bank President Mario Draghi is warning that if the euro continues to rise, the trading bloc's monetary policy could shift.

Still, the EU passed a new 7-year budget Friday, and markets in Europe and Asia are rising.

Mali town of Gao hit by 2nd suicide bomber attack

GAO, Mali (AP) ? A suicide bomber wearing military fatigues blew himself up near a checkpoint at the entrance to northern Mali's largest city, wounding one soldier in the second attack to hit the same location since Friday, residents and officials said Sunday.

A column of French tanks stood guard along the sandy road leading to the scene, as French and Malian soldiers patrolled the surrounding residential neighborhood of mud-walled homes.

The attack took place late Saturday at about 11 p.m., according to Malian Capt. Daouda Diarra. On Sunday morning, the bomber's torso lay in the scorching sun in the middle of the road, while his head sat in a pile of sand in a nearby wheelbarrow.

"When he leaped over the wall, we fired at him," Diarra said of the suicide bomber. "He then detonated his explosive belt."

Cpl. Mamadou Abdoulaye Maiga said other weapons were left behind at the scene, and French forces detonated three grenades Sunday morning.

It was the exact location where an earlier suicide bomber riding a motorcycle had blown himself up Friday morning, an attack that raised fears the militants ousted from Gao by French and Malian forces could now be launching a new wave of violence.

The Malian military gave no details about the bomber in Saturday's attack, stating only that the young man was Arab and a suspected member of MUJAO ? the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa.

The group seized control of Gao in April 2012 and had ruled the city until the arrival of French and Malian forces in late January. Military officials have said that residual elements of the group remain in the Gao area, and other fighters are hiding in the surrounding desert.

Friday's suicide bomber had been living at a known jihadist hideout in Gao, according to local residents. A guard at the home said that it had been visited three months ago by the one-eyed terror leader Moktar Belmoktar, who claimed responsibility for the attack on the BP-operated natural gas plant in Algeria.

Other jihadist leaders from MUJAO also had stayed in the luxurious two-story home with a verdant courtyard, which the militants took over when they captured Gao last year, the guard said.

Fears of suicide bombing attacks in Gao have been high since the discovery of industrial-strength explosives in the city last week. Four Malian soldiers also were killed by a land mine in the town of Gossi, raising fears the militants were planting explosives in the road.

On Sunday, crowds of nearby residents gathered under the shade of a few trees by the site of the suicide bombing attack. It was the second time in as many days that their homes had been shaken by blasts from suicide bombers.

"I am really afraid. You hear about these kinds of things in Pakistan or Afghanistan. Gao is becoming like Pakistan," said Maouloud Dicko, 30, as he sat on his motorcycle.

Malian soldiers are fighting jihadists in their desert hideouts just outside Gao, the country's defense minister said Saturday.

Defense Minister Yamoussa Camara said that at least two militants were killed during the fighting that took place Friday several miles (kilometers) outside northern Mali's largest town.

"We call on the population of Gao not to give in to panic and above all to cooperate with defense and security forces to drive out the terrorists who are trying to infiltrate among civilians," Camara said by telephone from Bamako, the capital.

Radical jihadists seized control of the major towns across northern Mali in April last year following a military coup in the distant capital, and a planned military intervention by West African neighbors stalled.

France intervened in its former colony on Jan. 11 after the militants began pushing south and seizing towns in central Mali, raising alarm that they were inching closer toward the capital.

While the French and Malian forces were able to retake the towns in central Mali, as well as Timbuktu and Gao, the latest suicide attacks indicate the militants are far from defeated.
