Is Phen375 Another Weight Loss Failure? Read What The People ...

There are so many diets around and so many diet products on the market that claim to do wonders, but they only leave us disappointed. Often marketers will simply say that it is up to the user how much weight they are to lose and that is the reason for the failure, but a lot of these products are nothing but scams and that is what you have to be careful of.

Phen375 is another product that has recently come onto the market, but by looking at the reviews, one can see that this is rated highly. This works by affecting the central nervous system so you actually think that you are not hungry and this is the way it trains your mind as well as your body.

For people who are at risk of various health problems such as high blood pressure, cholesterol or diabetes, they really have to watch their diet and this is where this product will be helpful. Probably the best place where you can buy Phen375 is online because this is going to be most convenient for you. Of course, you will want to make sure you are buying from a genuine, authentic source. Everyone knows that there are a lot of fake pills out there that are distributed on a daily basis and you don?t want to be just another victim. You will also need a prescription for this. Make sure that it is FDA approved as well and lastly, you will want the exact brand that your doctor has suggested, not forgetting to have a look at the expiry date.

As for scams, it is definitely worthwhile conducting the relevant research and looking up the phen375 scam to see if anything comes up, but you will find that if there is anything, it will be one or two competitors who are getting nasty.

Generally, reports have been on the positive side with obese people being able to lose a lot of weight. However, we live in a dangerous world, so you have to make sure that you are receiving the real thing. People who tell you that this is a scam have probably been the victim of fake pills in the past.

Obviously, you will also want to follow the appropriate eating plan as well as a regular exercise routine. It is no use using this product in order cut down on the calories and avoid cholesterol whilst you are still eating potato chips and fatty meats. You still have to be sensible about this. It is also important to stick to a diet like this; otherwise the chances are that you will gain weight again once you have finished with the supplement.

In terms of consumption, it is important to get the balance right. Too much can be risky so don?t think that because you are going to take an extra dose, you will shed the pounds at a faster rate. This can be dangerous so just follow the instructions. Most times you will have to take this before breakfast when your stomach is still empty, which makes sense. There are different brands so they will differ slightly.

For people that are trying to lose weight there are so many products on the market today that it is very confusing as to what works and what does not. A fairly new product has arrived which you can read a lot more about here and now many people are wondering where to buy Phen375 so that they can try this new weight loss supplement. The reports have been very positive so far but it should not be treated as a miracle cure. If you still insist on eating a lot of sugar based and fatty foods then you will struggle even with this supplement. It is really designed to help accelerate the effect of changing to a healthier diet so that you lose weight faster.

Fast and Furious back in headlines as Univision reportedly finds more victims

Spanish-language television network Univision plans to air a television special that it said reveals more violence than previously known, as well as the stories of how many more Operation Fast and Furious victims were killed, the network announced in a Friday release.

?The consequences of the controversial ?Fast and Furious? undercover operation put in place by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in 2009 have been deadlier than what has been made public to date,? the network said. ?The exclusive, in-depth investigation by Univision News? award-winning Investigative Unit ? Univision Investiga ? has found that the guns that crossed the border as part of Operation Fast and Furious caused dozens of deaths inside Mexico.?

Among other groups of Fast and Furious victim stories Univision says it will tell in the special to air Sunday evening at 7 p.m., is one about how ?16 young people attending a party in a residential area of Ciudad Ju?rez in January of 2010? were gunned down with weapons the Obama administration gave to drug cartel criminals through Fast and Furious.

?Univision News? Investigative Unit was also able to identify additional guns that escaped the control of ATF agents and were used in different types of crimes throughout Mexico,? the network added. ?Furthermore, some of these guns ? none of which were reported by congressional investigators ? were put in the hands of drug traffickers in Honduras, Puerto Rico, and Colombia. A person familiar with the recent congressional hearings called Univision?s findings ?the holy grail? that Congress had been searching for.?

A video preview published on Friday shows a number of the bodies of people killed with Fast and Furious weapons, as well as victims? family members pleading with outgoing Mexican President Felipe Calderon for justice.

Congressional investigators from the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and the Senate Judiciary Committee have been probing Fast and Furious since early 2011, shortly after U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry was murdered with Fast and Furious weapons. Terry was killed on Dec. 14, 2010, in Peck Canyon, Ariz.

Others whose murders have been connected to Fast and Furious weapons include Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agent Jaime Zapata and Mexican citizen Mario Gonzalez. Gonzalez?s sister, Patricia Gonzalez, was the state prosecutor for the Mexican state of Chihuahua.

Fast and Furious was a program of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, overseen by Attorney General Eric Holder?s DOJ. It sent thousands of weapons to Mexican drug cartels via straw purchasers ? people who purchased guns in the United States with the known intention of illegally trafficking them somewhere else.

Mexican government officials have estimated that at least 300 people in Mexico were killed with Fast and Furious weapons.

Holder and President Barack Barack Obama have obstructed the congressional investigations into this scandal. After months of failure to comply with a subpoena for Fast and Furious documents, information and witnesses, Holder was voted on a bipartisan basis into criminal and civil contempt of Congress. Obama has asserted executive privilege over the documents.

The DOJ?s internal inspector general recently released a report concluding that Holder was not cleared by his currently ongoing investigation, despite a swath of media coverage saying that Holder was ?exonerated? by it. Though he did conclude that he couldn?t find evidence or proof Holder knew about Fast and Furious, DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz testified before Congress that almost everyone in Holder?s inner circle at DOJ did know, and that he and his team think it?s odd at best that Holder didn?t.

?We found, as we outlined in the report, we struggle to understand how an operation of this size, of this importance, that impacted another country like it did, could not have been briefed up to the attorney general of the United States,? Horowitz said during a House oversight committee hearing. ?It should have been, in our view. It was that kind of a case.?

Former White House National Security Council staffer Kevin O?Reilly ? who was intimately involved in Fast and Furious planning with Phoenix ATF officials, according to emails obtained throughout the congressional investigation ? has since been reassigned by the Department of State to a detail in Iraq. Obama administration officials have refused to make O?Reilly available to congressional investigators and to Horowitz?s internal DOJ investigation.

On Friday, CBS News? Sharyl Attkisson reported that congressional Republicans are now threatening to subpoena O?Reilly and force his testimony on Fast and Furious.

Univision has aggressively covered Fast and Furious, and its most recent major run-in with the scandal came when network anchor Jorge Ramos grilled Obama in an interview on the scandal, asking him why he hasn?t ?fired? Holder. During the interview, Obama made at least one false statement relating to Fast and Furious.

Mars: Curiosity's DAN instrument suggests Gale Crater drier than expected

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Preliminary data from the Curiosity Mars Science Laboratory, presented at the European Planetary Science Conference on 28 September, indicate that the Gale Crater landing site might be drier than expected.

The Curiosity rover is designed to carry out research into whether Mars was ever able to support life, and a key element of this search is the hunt for water. Although Mars has many features on its surface that suggest a distant past in which the planet had abundant liquid water in the form of rivers and lakes, the only water known to be abundant on Mars today is frozen, embedded in the soil, and in large ice caps at both poles.

The Dynamic Albedo of Neutrons (DAN) instrument on board Curiosity is designed to detect the location and abundance of water thanks to the way hydrogen (one of water's components) reflects neutrons. When neutrons hit heavy particles, they bounce off with little loss in energy, but when they hit hydrogen atoms (which are much lighter and have approximately the same mass as neutrons), they lose half of their energy.

The DAN instrument works by firing a pulse of neutrons at the ground beneath the rover and detecting the way it is reflected. The intensity of the reflection depends on the proportion of water in the ground, while the time the pulse takes to reach the detector is a function of the depth at which the water is located.

"The prediction based on previous measurements using the Mars Odyssey orbiter was that the soil in Gale Crater would be around 6% water. But the preliminary results from Curiosity show only a fraction of this," said Maxim Mokrousov (Russian Space Research Institute), the lead designer of the instrument.

One possible explanation of the discrepancy lies in the variability of water content across the surface of Mars. There are large-scale variations, with polar regions in particular having high abundances of water, but also substantial local differences even within individual regions on Mars.

The Mars Odyssey spacecraft is only able to measure water abundance for an area around 300 by 300 kilometres -- it cannot make high resolution maps. It may therefore be that Odyssey's figure for Gale Crater is an accurate (but somewhat misleading) average of significantly varying hydrogen abundances in different parts the crater.

Indeed, over the small distance that the rover has already covered, DAN has observed variations in the detector counting rates that may indicate different levels of hydrogen in the ground, hinting that this is likely to be the case.

Curiosity's ability to probe the water content in the martian soil in specific locations, rather than averages of broad regions, allows for a far more precise and detailed understanding of the distribution of water ice on Mars.

New Zealand admits illegally spying on Kim Dotcom

Mark Coote / Reuters

The FBI requested the arrest of Kim Dotcom for leading a group that netted $175 million since 2005 by allegedly copying and distributing music, films and other copyrighted content without authorization.

By NBC News' Ian Johnston and wire reports

New Zealand's spy agency illegally carried out surveillance on Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom, an official report showed Thursday, prompting an apology from the prime minister and dealing a possible blow to a U.S. bid to extradite him.

Washington wants the 38-year-old German national, also known as Kim Schmitz, to be sent to the United States to face charges of internet piracy and breaking copyright laws.?

The FBI requested the arrest of Dotcom for leading a group that netted $175 million since 2005 by allegedly copying and distributing music, films and other copyrighted content without authorization.

Dotcom maintains that the Megaupload site was no more than an online storage facility, and has accused Hollywood of lobbying the U.S. government to prosecute him.

New Zealand police asked the?Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB)?to keep track of Dotcom and his colleagues before a raid in late January on his rented country estate near Auckland, which saw computers and hard drives, works of art, and cars confiscated.

Megaupload founder's homes raided, $5M in luxury cars seized

A report by Justice Paul Neazor found that the GCSB had illegally spied on Dotcom because it is only allowed to gather ?foreign intelligence? and people who are New Zealand citizens or residents are protected.

Megaupload founder "Kim Dotcom," the alleged mastermind behind one of the Internet's biggest and most lucrative schemes, appeared in a New Zealand court Monday morning as new details emerged about his extravagant lifestyle. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

The illegal surveillance may deal another blow to the U.S. extradition case after a New Zealand court ruled in June that search warrants used in the raid on Dotcom's home were illegal.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key blamed ?human error? in a statement, saying the GCSB had relied on information from the police about Dotcom?s residency status without checking further and also made a mistake in interpreting the law.

?It is the GCSB?s responsibility to act within the law, and it is hugely disappointing that in this case its actions fell outside the law. I am personally very disappointed that the agency failed to fully understand the workings of its own legislation,? he said.

More international coverage from NBC News

The director of the GCSB, Ian Fletcher, said he was ?very sorry? over the affair in a statement, admitting that ?we got this wrong.?

?I know that it will take time to regain the trust and confidence that we have lost,? he said.

Opposition Labour Party leader David Shearer described the Neazor report as a ?whitewash,? and called for a broader inquiry in a statement.

He complained the report ?doesn?t address why, in the 15 meetings the Prime Minister had with GCSB this year, he was not briefed about this issue given it involved national security and a massive police operation involving the FBI.?

Megaupload suspect Kim Dotcom denies Internet piracy, money laundering

Ira Rothken, a U.S. lawyer working with Dotcom?s defense team, told Radio New Zealand that he wanted to find out what Key knew and when he found out.

Video is released from the mansion raid of Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom, just as the online file-sharing tycoon goes on trial. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

?We?ve seen a great amount of government aggression in this case, from the raid on a family with children ? Mr. Dotcom?s residence ? to illegal search warrants to what we think is an illegal search and seizure and we also have seen that the United States has illegally taken some data offshore,? Rothken said.

Feds shut down popular file-sharing website Megaupload

Asked if the case should continue, Rothken told Radio New Zealand, ?The prosecution [lawyers] in both New Zealand and the United States likely has a discretion that when you have such a high dose of illegality that goes into the process of dismissing the case in the interests of justice. Of course we think that?s the right thing to do.?

U.S. authorities are currently appealing a New Zealand court decision that Dotcom should be allowed to see the evidence on which the extradition hearing will be based.

The extradition hearing has been delayed until March 2013.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Trial of Pope Benedict's former butler to start on Saturday

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict's former butler, Paolo Gabriele, goes on trial on Saturday in one of the most embarrassing episodes in recent Vatican history.

The trial of the 46-year-old man who served the pope his meals and helped him dress is due to start at 9:30 a.m. (4.30 p.m. EDT) in the Vatican's little-used tribunal, a small room with rich paneled wood and a papal emblem on its ceiling.

His arrest on May 23 caused an international furor after police found confidential documents in his apartment inside the Vatican, a dramatic twist that threw the global media spotlight on an institution battling to defend its reputation from allegations of graft.

A three-judge panel will decide the fate of Gabriele, whom the pope used to call "Paoletto" (little Paul) and who is now described in Vatican documents as "the defendant".

Gabriele stands accused of stealing the pontiff's personal papers and leaking them to the media in what he says was an attempt to clean up corruption at the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church.

According to an indictment last August, Gabriele told investigators he had acted because he saw "evil and corruption everywhere in the Church" and wanted to help root it out "because the pope was not sufficiently informed".

The documents pointed to a power struggle at the Church's highest levels.

Gabriele, who said he saw himself as a whistle-blowing "agent of the Holy Spirit", is widely expected to be convicted on charges of aggravated theft because he has confessed.

The trial procedures will be based on a 19th century Italian penal code and could result in a prison sentence of up to four years for Gabriele and one year for Claudio Sciarpelletti, a computer expert charged with aiding and abetting him.

CORRUPTION ALLEGATIONS

It is not clear how long the trial might last.

Gabriele, a father of three who lived a simple but comfortable life in the city-state, told investigators after his arrest in May that he believed a shock "could be a healthy thing to bring the Church back on the right track".

His arrest capped nearly five months of intrigue and suspense after a string of documents and private letters found their way into the Italian media.

The most notorious of the letters were written to the pope by Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, currently the Vatican's ambassador to Washington, who was deputy governor of Vatican City at the time.

In one, Vigano complains that when he took office in 2009, he discovered corruption, nepotism and cronyism linked to the awarding of contracts to outside companies at inflated prices.

Vigano later wrote to the pope about a smear campaign against him by other Vatican officials who were upset that he had taken drastic steps to clean up the purchasing procedures.

Despite begging not to be moved away from the Vatican, Vigano was later transferred to Washington by Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.

Since the papal state has no prison, Gabriele would serve time in an Italian jail, though the pope is widely expected to pardon him.

Use Sugru to Improve the Fit on Apple?s New EarPods (or Any Loose-Fitting Earbuds) [DIY]

Use Sugru to Improve the Fit on Apple’s New EarPods (or Any Loose-Fitting Earbuds) If you've picked up a pair of Apple's new EarPods, you've probably read that Apple designed them to fit all types of ears. That hasn't stopped many reviewers from pointing out they're a little loose and prone to falling out. The fix? A little sugru, that moldable silicone we love so much.

Instructables user juniortan picked up a pair and says they're a little loose in his ears, but all it took was a touch of sugru around the outside of the EarPods to fix the problem. He explained you only need a little bit?maybe 1/5 of the pack?to customize both earpieces, and once the sugru has dried nicely, they'll fit like a glove. Plus, you can always press down the sugru or add more to get a perfect fit. We've shown you how to repair damaged earbuds before with Sugru?it makes sense that it can also be used to improve the fit of the ones you have. Check out the link below for a full step-by-step, complete with photos of the finished product.

Tesla Motors rolling out ultra-fast Supercharger electric car charging stations

The locations can charge Model S vehicles several times faster at no cost to owners

Tesla Motors, the electric car manufacturer started by SpaceX and PayPal co-founder Elon Musk, has unveiled an ambitious plan to place what it calls Supercharger stations across the U.S. for use by owners of its vehicles. Debuting in California this month, the stations are designed to fully charge Tesla's Model S sedan in about an hour, providing them with enough charge in 30 minutes to travel 150 miles.

Six of the stations, which are free to use for Tesla owners as long as they have their vehicles, are planned for California and will be laid out in such a way as to fall within each others' driving radius. That way, Model S owners can simply plan their route around them on long road trips. The long-term plan is to eventually cover the U.S. in the stations. 100 are planned to open by 2015.

The Supercharger connections deliver 90 kilowatts of electricity strait to the Model S battery, bypassing the car's charging system in the process. Tesla says this allows one outlet at the stations to provide nearly four-and-a-half times the current of two standard Model S charging setups. There's no word on how much it's costing Tesla to operate the stations, but we have to imagine the electric bill's going to be out of this world.

Democrats likely to retain Senate as critical races shift

After weeks in which the fate of the Senate simmered at nearly even odds of flipping for Republicans or remaining in Democratic control, the outlook has shifted dramatically in the Democrats' favor. The incumbent party now has an 80 percent chance of retaining its majority, according to the Signal's prediction model.

The break is largely due to critical races in Missouri, Wisconsin, Massachusetts, and Virginia, all of which have favored the Republican at some point in the last month and now favor the Democratic candidate.

?

The cards appeared heavily stacked in the Republicans' favor going in to this election season. The Democrats currently control the Senate, but they have only 30 returning senators to the Republicans' 37 returning senators among the two-thirds of the chamber not up for reelection this cycle. That, combined with strong anti-incumbent currents in the electorate, presented an uphill battle for the Democratic Party.

The trouble for the Republicans began with Missouri with Republican nominee Todd Akin's comments parsing different types of rape. This had been a likely pickup for? Republicans, given the unpopularity of Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill. The prediction markets wavered on this race given the uncertainty as to whether Akin would be forced to withdraw, but have moved in McCaskill's favor as the likelihood that Akin will be replaced has drifted to 0.

That shift alone was enough to throw the fate of the Senate into turmoil, because it added one more variable to an already complicated list of scenarios. The frontrunner in Maine, independent Angus King, has not said which party he will caucus with if elected. In the event of a tie, control will go to whichever party wins the White House.

Next, we have a roller coaster in Wisconsin. Democratic candidate Tammy Baldwin initially looked strong against a field of Republican possibilities. Then, the strongest of those, former governor Tommy Thompson, won the primary. For a while, he held a commanding lead, dominating the polling after his primary win. A series of polls in mid-September demonstrated a massive surge for Baldwin, however, and the markets have responded accordingly.

The Massachusetts senatorial race, the most anticipated senatorial contest of the election, has been close all along. The incumbent, Republican Scott Brown, faces a formidable opponent in Elizabeth Warren. The state is heavily Democratic, and that party identification may prove to be the tiebreaker for Warren, who has pulled ahead in recent polling and is now 61.6 percent likely to take the Republican held seat.

The Virginia senatorial race pits former senator and former governor George Allen against former governor Tim Kaine. Kaine, the Democrat, has pulled ahead in this race in concert with Obama's odds in the Old Dominion. Kaine is now 66.8 percent likely to carry the open Democratic seat that retiring senator Jim Webb captured from Allen six years ago. Obama has a 73.9 percent chance to repeat in the state he narrowly won in 2008.

Malnourished | Gina Zeidler Malnourished | Destination ...

If I were to ask you if you were malnourished what would you say? Nope. Gina, Why would you ask that? What the heck are you talking about?

Matt and I are on a journey to make simple changes in our lifestyle to really nourish ourselves. From changing our soaps, to juicing and buying organic. We in the process of really paying attention to what were are putting in and on our body. Getting rid of toxins and slowly but surely trying to make our home more simple and healthy.

While going through all of this, it?s crossed my mind more than once??..

Am I really nourished in my life? ?While I believe my life is FULL, am filled with the right things? Or am I filled with empty things therefore leading me to be malnourished. Not just malnourished in my body, but in my soul.

Think of your work, what are your filling your time with? Facebook? Comparison? A million sessions/appointments everyday of the week? Are you NOURISHING your business right now? I know it?s the midst of the busy season, but this is the place where we need it the most. What are you doing to FILL your creativity during this madness? What are you doing to keep it all together?

Think of your everyday life & family, what are you nourished with? Running a million errands and fast food meals? Skipping workouts because you are too tired to get out of bed? ?Not getting home till 10 at night and scrambling for the next morning? Now while all of these things aren?t inherently bad, but where is the wholesome family time to REPLENISH? The naps on Sunday afternoon? Home cooked meals? Prancing around in the fall time? Board games? Hot chai and coffee dates?

I know. I bet your bottoms dollar that you don?t have a moment to spare. That our schedules are too stinkin? crazy. We are definitely full. Our time. Our brains. Our emotions are full.

But full of WHAT? Are we filled with the right things? The things that really matter?

I have been hit with this challenge in my life and in my spiritual walk almost everyday. Goodness I am FULL. But are the things in my schedule, the things that I am watching, the things that I am putting into my body, really nourishing it? Nourishing my soul? Or I am being sucked into things that don?t produce and in reality are leaving me MALNOURISHED.?

For example, right now while I edit I often catch up on shows on Hulu. Now I don?t think there is anything wrong with this, but could I be more nourishing to my soul with a couple sermons or audiobooks on tape instead of a pointless drama. YES. Do I really need to have FB on my phone and spend ye time looking at that instead of the beautiful fall that is here and gone in MN, or even just admiring my hubby? NO. I am so eager to spend time reading on how to do this or that better, but I am not taking that same amount of time to go to the only book that really matters and spend time with the Lord. When the bible clearly states, ?Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. -Matthew 4:4?so Gina go and read that word. What a blessing that you have it available to read, freely!?

I want to be challenged to nourish my mind, heart and soul. Even during the busy times. Even when I feel too tired, or don?t think it?s worth it.?I don?t want to just go through the motions and??think? that I am nourished, when in turn my life could be so much more full.

I am so excited to head out for our last Making Things Happen Tour in just a short couple of weeks, where we identify what NOURISHES us. What builds and pushes us towards a fulfilling life and satisfying soul. Everytime I walk out of the workshop with a fresh perspective and clearer goals. I am SO grateful to have the chance to share this with others! I am so excited to meet all of you that are coming and if you want in there might be a couple of spots left!

Remember, I know it feels helpless sometimes, but?You have the choice. ?I encourage each of you to look at each area of your life and make a list of where you generally spend your time. Give me a top five and be honest here. How do you spend your hours during the day? Are you nourishing your business, family and life with activities that are FULL of the good stuff? Or the empty stuff??You are not controlled by your circumstances. You can choose to nourish in the midst of pain, the busy, the trouble and heartbreak. And if you ever want to talk more about it email me or comment and I would love to listen and pray for you.

Let?s get truly nourished y?all. You with me?

Large bacterial population colonized land 2.75 billion years ago

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? There is evidence that some microbial life had migrated from Earth's oceans to land by 2.75 billion years ago, though many scientists believe such land-based life was limited because the ozone layer that shields against ultraviolet radiation did not form until hundreds of millions years later.

But new research from the University of Washington suggests that early microbes might have been widespread on land, producing oxygen and weathering pyrite, an iron sulfide mineral, which released sulfur and molybdenum into the oceans.

"This shows that life didn't just exist in a few little places on land. It was important on a global scale because it was enhancing the flow of sulfate from land into the ocean," said Eva St?eken, a UW doctoral student in Earth and space sciences.

In turn, the influx of sulfur probably enhanced the spread of life in the oceans, said St?eken, who is the lead author of a paper presenting the research published Sunday (Sept. 23) in Nature Geoscience. The work also will be part of her doctoral dissertation.

Sulfur could have been released into sea water by other processes, including volcanic activity. But evidence that molybdenum was being released at the same time suggests that both substances were being liberated as bacteria slowly disintegrated continental rocks, she said.

If that is the case, it likely means the land-based microbes were producing oxygen well in advance of what geologists refer to as the "Great Oxidation Event" about 2.4 billion years ago that initiated the oxygen-rich atmosphere that fostered life as we know it.

In fact, the added sulfur might have allowed marine microbes to consume methane, which could have set the stage for atmospheric oxygenation. Before that occurred, it is likely large amounts of oxygen were destroyed by reacting with methane that rose from the ocean into the air.

"It supports the theory that oxygen was being produced for several hundred million years before the Great Oxidation Event. It just took time for it to reach higher concentrations in the atmosphere," St?eken said.

The research examined data on sulfur levels in 1,194 samples from marine sediment formations dating from before the Cambrian period began about 542 million years ago. The processes by which sulfur can be added or removed are understood well enough to detect biological contributions, the researchers said.

The data came from numerous research projects during the last several decades, but in most cases those observations were just a small part of much larger studies. In an effort to provide consistent interpretation, St?eken combed the research record for data that came from similar types of sedimentary rock and similar environments.

"The data has been out there for a long time, but people have ignored it because it is hard to interpret when it is not part of a large database," she said.

Co-authors are David Catling and Roger Buick, UW professors of Earth and space sciences. The work was funded by the National Science Foundation and the Virtual Planet Laboratory in the UW Department of Astronomy.

Switched On The iPod's modern family

If you bet that Apple was going to turn the square, occasionally wrist-strapped iPod nano into a MOTOACTV-like watch that would provide a glanceable window into iPhone apps, you lost. Clearly, Apple could have gone that route. It teased in the last generation with an expanding selection of watch faces and used this generation to add Bluetooth and enable a thinner design via the new Lightning connector. Nevertheless, Apple decided to forgo the embryonic smartwatch market. Indeed, it returned to the larger, longer iPod nano school of yore, but with the single-button design of its iOS mobile devices complementing a multitouch interface.

The watch faces may be gone, but the new iPod nano regains the ability to play video while retaining photo display and Nike+ integration. It has become the equivalent of the lineup's feature phone, albeit with a better user interface. Examined in context, the new clip-free iPod nano looks more at home as a midrange option between the tiny iPod shuffle and the now larger iPod touch.

Writing for the World SF Blog, by fiction editor Sarah Newton ? The ...

Back in March this year I had the great opportunity to take over from Debbie Moorhouse as fiction editor here at the World SF Blog. In the previous months, Debbie had blazed a trail, publishing short fiction works by authors from all over the globe, and naturally I jumped at the chance to help build this increasingly diverse and stimulating resource for speculative fiction fans everywhere.

The past six months have been filled with inspiring submissions exploring the nature of speculative fiction. In my university days I studied Russian and German literature, and have always loved classics from all around the world; but, like many English language readers, my exposure to non-English language speculative fiction?apart from the obvious canon titles?was always lacking. That?s a crazy situation in our increasingly global society, and one I knew needed remedying. That?s why it?s been a delight every week to read the subs to the World SF Blog, excited that my mind is going to be stretched and reshaped in new and unexpected ways.

For me, that?s what the World SF Blog is about. As writers and readers, we love to be exposed to the wildest flights of fancy about what our world is and could be. Here at the blog, anyone writing in English, regardless of whether it?s their first language and whatever their culture of origin, participates in a polyphony. We publish works by writers of all countries, making the site a constant dialectic, discussing and redefining speculative fiction, exposing, explaining, and working magic with cultural backgrounds, archetypes, perspectives.

That?s an editorial challenge. In a former life I was a translator and interpreter of Russian and Japanese, and I?ve a passion for languages. I?m no stranger to the issues of writing in a language that?s not your first language, or of translating your own language into another. When I edit a native English speaker, I view their writing from the perspective of a native speaker. With a non-English speaker, I find their writing sings with cadences, idioms, and structures of another culture, which it would be a crime to try and shoehorn into a rigorous, native English form. Over the past six months I?ve worked with writers to polish pieces, gently nudge turns of phrase, spellings, and word choices, so that they don?t appear jarring or obscure to the reader?s ear, while at the same time preserving the music and internal harmony of the writer?s own language and culture. Lyricism is an integral part of speculative fiction, and it?s essential to help it express itself fully.

Like the past, the future is a foreign country. But its foreignness is the stuff of our dreams and hopes, and sometimes our nightmares and fears. Whether speculative fiction talks about utopias or dystopias, personal experience or cosmic ideas, it offers suggestions for what our world could or should be. Its role as a forum for debating our future is amazingly powerful. Where are we heading? What kind of world do we want to live in? What decisions should our society be making to secure tomorrow?

In my novel Mindjammer I write about a ?Mindscape??a vast, interstellar repository of human memories and knowledge, to which every person is connected. That?s not just a metaphor: the Mindscape is out there, now, and we all access it every day. Over the past two decades it has mutated from an artefact of top-down cultural patronage into a decentralized, anarchic mass mind. The conscience of the human race is now online, and we as its readers and writers are helping to define it. We can allow cacophony and conflict to proliferate, or synthesis, debate, and exchange.

Blogs like the World SF Blog are the arenas for our many voices, visions, and questions. That?s why I hope you?ll continue to send us your flights of fancy and hard-written dreams. And let us know what you think of the stories, too?I?d love to see readers and writers increasingly use the World SF Blog to discuss the engaging ideas expressed here.

So?what sort of submissions are we looking for? Well, I think it?s important to stress that the ?SF? in ?World SF? refers to speculative fiction of all kinds, and not just science-fiction. In the past six months I?ve seen tales of psychological horror, magical realism, lyrical post-apocalyptic myth, zombies, werewolves, space colonies, archaeology, mystery, and metaphysics cross my desk?all of which are perfect. I haven?t seen much fiction set in more traditional fantasy environments; but, whatever you submit, the ?speculative? should be uppermost?tales of the weird, the fantastic, of ?what if? and wonder.

Readers?let us know what you like, what you?d like to see more of, or just ideas you have for the blog. Writers?if you?re out there with a beautiful idea or a story to tell, then send it through. It doesn?t matter which country you?re from?we publish works from the ?main? English-speaking countries just as much as we do from those for whom English isn?t a first language. Email us, then sit back and wait a few months for us to reply. We?re blessed with a great number of high quality submissions, and it can take us time to get back to you, but rest assured we?re passionate about speculative fiction, and will give your stories every attention they deserve.

Thanks for making my first six months so stimulating and inspiring. Long may it continue!

Does Public Speaking Make You Nervous? | Psychology Today

I remember reading somewhere that people prefer dental work to public speaking. After a few months of dental work which included root canal, I can?t say I agree with that. But what if you think that public speaking is the worst thing in the world but you have to do it anyway? ? There are things you can do to minimize the anxiety and trepidation associated with public speaking. You can begin by reframing your thoughts.

One of the things that might be helpful is to think about the fact that most people are largely unaware of someone else?s actual state of anxiety and discomfort when presenting before an audience. ?We are all in our own worlds made up of our own thoughts. According to the research done by the psychologist Elaine Aron, it is only about 20% of the population that has some keen awareness or ?high sensitivity? to the nuances of other people. That means that the other 80 percent is not that cued in to noticing that you are nervous. ? Nor do most people particularly care.??People are more concerned with content than whether the person is nervous saying it. ?Think about it, when we listen to politicians, in our eagerness to hear what they have to say, or in our outrage to what we've heard, do we really care about whether they are nervous? We all come from our own reference point and?nobody really knows what is going on with someone else (unless they actually tell you.) ?So if you think that everyone can tell that you are nervous, there is a really good chance that they have no idea.

And here are some things that might help lower the anxiety associated with public speaking.

1. Do your homework and plan what you want to say. ???As obvious as that might seem, ?I'll wing it" doesn't always work.?Think before you speak. Case in point, political speechs that leave us wondering why clearly no thought was given to some outrageous thing that was said. ?Knowing what it is that you want to say goes a long way in lowering anxiety.

2. Write down what you are going to say. Just knowing that you've written down on paper what it is you plan to say lowers your anxiety.?A thoughtful toast at a wedding read from a napkin, for example, is always well received and no one cares that it wasn't memorized. ?I suggest note cards printed or written in a really large font that you can see comfortably at a distance. (So you don't have to squint or fumble for reading glasses.)?If you have to fall back on reading, so be it?it is not the worst thing in the world. Teleprompters were made for a reason.

3. Give yourself permission to be imperfect. Of course you want to do a great job, but expecting to never mess up is not realistic. Sometimes we're not on our game and you need to give yourself a break. By being kind to yourself, you lower the anxiety that contributes to messing up.

4. And finally, do something nice for yourself after you've finished. In a behavioral way, positive reinforcement sets the stage for future successes.
