Easy eatin' Narrow Your Stimulus | Concierge Fitness Nurse ...

Just last week, I sent out a way for you to get The Minky Plan list of foods in a photo form. I hope you got a chance to look at it. ?I just wanted to share a typical day of what I eat on The Minky Plan (50% fat, but not Atkins) that is more than satisfying, I know I am losing weight all day long because of my choices that put my body into fat-burning mode. ?Please keep in mind that most mornings, I exercise for about 90 seconds in a fasted state. ?This morning though, I did my Ritual Trek with PangPang (about 40 min.) in a fasted state (don?t recommend to newbies on the Minky Plan) and didn?t have my first meal till 12:30pm.

Yes. I?m a ?bona-fide breakfast skipper?! ?I also narrow my stimulus and eat a chosen, yet variety of foods. ?I eat similar foods often. ?When I get tired of them I eat what I want on my D.O.D. (Day of Desire), but when I have less food to choose from, I make better choices the other 5 days of the week. ?What about the other day? well on that day I choose not to eat at all. ?One day a week I fast. ?From 11am to 11am. ?Most of the time is spent being very productive and then sleeping. ?It?s amazing what you can get done when you don?t worry about food all the time. (After Hurricane Sandy, here at the Jersey Shore, using what we had or had left became a way of life. ?We ate things that nourished our mind, body and soul? we didn?t need take out or another quick chemical & carb fix. ?We ?found something to do with that can of beans and Spam. ?We survived on what we had and were happy for having it. ?Remember it?s too many poor quality crap calories that makes you sick then fat; NOT real, natural & satisfying fat in foods). Two fats you should avoid: ?trans fats and hydrogenated fat? period.
The Minky Plan supports ALL healthy fats.

So the meals I am about to show you are from two days before Christmas, not today. ?For breakfast, (my first meal) I had my oatmeal pancake (Made with plain oatmeal first. ?Then mix with WHOLE egg, add xylitol (or stevia), cinnamon, some cut-up apple (optional), pan fry mixture in coconut oil and/or butter (I also have coffee with heavy cream, cinnamon, NO sugar):

Finished oatmeal pancake. YUM! No syrup needed.

?

For lunch (my second meal) I had chicken ceasar salad with thigh meat from leftover pan fried chicken. ?Usually I deep fry my chicken in beef tallow, awaiting a new order from Missouri, so in a pinch, I will use 2 parts canola oil and 1 part coconut oil and pan fry my chicken thigh with the skin on them. ?You don?t have to eat the skin if you don?t want to, ?but I think it?s the best part. ?Anyway, it protects the meat when cooking. ?I removed the skin for the chicken salad (off the cold refrigerated chicken) and cut up the meat. ?Then I cut-up & added ?romaine, iceberg and boston lettuce with baby bella mushrooms, parmesan cheese and real bacon bits. ?The best part: my own salad dressing. ?I use raw vinegar & cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil (green in color NOT for cooking!), some seasonings. ?Making your own salad dressing is one of the best, easiest ways to improve your health. ?Very appetizing and filling:

Very filling and satisfying. That?s oolong tea, unsweetened.

?

I said it was filling. ?I couldn?t finish:

I never clean my plate. I am always full before I finish. It can be done. It should be done. My Honey had the rest. He wanted more. Sorry, I know it was Yummy. Oh, that?s my freshly ground flax seed, that I have very often, even out at restaurants.

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

Finally for dinner (my third meal). ?I love liver. ?I know it?s a strong organ meat. ?But those of you who have followed me know how strongly I feel about organ meats and our ancestors. ?Anyway, you can subsitute the liver for another protein. ?My son thought liver was steak till he was about 11 years old. :) By the way, I got the all the foods very cheap. ?Here?s how they looked before I cooked them:

Liver is still very cheap. Frozen spinach, frozen sweet potato patties that I got at ALDI, and my pan frying oil of choice, coconut oil. It was the most expensive item.

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

Here?s what the dinner looked like:

Oh, forgot to mention that I add salt while cooking, add cinnamon to the sweet potato patties and add butter to vegetables? to better absorb the vitamins and minerals. Note all of this on a 7-inch plate! Also yes, that is a shot of tequila. And purified water, of course.

?

Considering a divorce? Wait until January

12 hrs.

Going through a divorce during the holidays can be emotionally wrenching, which is why many people don't do it -- they put it off until January.?

"People don't want to upset the apple cart over the holidays, and they want a peaceful Christmas, Hanukkah or New Year's. And then, because they don't want to spend another damned year with that spouse of theirs, as soon as the holidays are over they pull the plug and file," says Alton Abramowitz, president of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.?

While there are no hard numbers on how many divorces are filed in January, Abramowitz says it's undoubtedly a popular time to act, rivaled only by September, when marriages break up after the summer holidays. Yet waiting for the holidays to pass doesn't all come down to simply wanting a harmonious holiday season. There are sound financial reasons to wait until January.?

1. Waiting for the bonus?
A husband or wife who waits until January is likely to be entitled to any year-end windfall that might come from a spouse's job.?

"In New York, at least, once you file for divorce and you set the cut-off date; anything you obtain afterward is separate property," says Steven Goldfeder, a matrimonial attorney in New York City who acknowledges that year-end bonuses are often fought over, even if a spouse declares he or she wants a divorce in January. "Someone could claim the bonus isn't really for that particular year, but a payment to entice someone to stay at the firm for the future."?

2. Cool your emotions?
The holidays are a time when emotions run high. "If your spouse always has it in her mind that Christmas was ruined, she or he may not be so eager to settle with you," says Goldfeder. "Your divorce might drag out for months or years longer than it would have."?

Once, shortly before Christmas, Goldfeder received a call from a client who said a co-worker had had a baby they both believed was his. The client, married and the father of three, planned to tell his wife and assumed she would leave him. Goldfeder talked him into first getting a paternity test. The client's family had a nice Christmas, and the day after, the client learned he wasn't the father.?

Not exactly a warm holiday tale, but by cooling your emotions, you may save your family a lot of stress.?

3. Avoid disastrous shopping?
December is the shopping season, and that can spell disaster if an angry spouse is set loose with a credit card. "The spouse served with divorce papers may feel that they deserve some kind of emotional gift because of this horrible thing their spouse did to them," says Kevin Worthley, a certified divorce financial analyst and certified financial planner in Warwick, R.I.

An angry spouse may also be more inclined to want to drain the bank accounts and run up the credit cards. "That's a danger any time, but past the holidays, when everything's been bought, there's likely less inclination to buy a big-ticket item out of revenge," says Worthley.?

4. Think about April?
At year-end, taxes come to mind. "Obviously, the better records you have, the better position you're going to be in," says Andrew Katzenstein, a Los Angeles lawyer, referring to paperwork that you might want to start collecting now.?

Katzenstein, who specializes in assisting high-net-worth individuals, businesses and charities, says that in the past there haven't been many tax advantages to filing for a divorce in January rather than December. Filling for divorce is just a beginning step, after all. Many couples end up filing their taxes jointly until the divorce is completed.?

But tax brackets may go up in 2013, depending on whether the U.S. budget dispute is resolved. So going forward, the calculus may be different. "The person who pays alimony will get more bang for their deduction buck, and the person receiving the payments will pay more taxes," he says.?

5. More time to plan?
If you've made up your mind that a divorce is going to be one of your New Year's resolutions, there are things you can do now. Whatever side you end up on -- paying alimony or receiving it -- you need to start preparing.?

"You should start collecting all of your end-of-the-year statements," says Worthley. "You really need to know everything -- your household budget, your assets, what's in your checking account, how much you're paying for the mortgage, all of your debts and your credit card balances. It's important to get all of that."?

Your financial records will be needed to determine how much spousal support will be paid out, and how the finances will be divided. "The more information you get, the less complicated it'll be when you're negotiating and working things out with a financial mediator, attorney or judge," says Deborah Moskovitch, a divorce coach in Toronto who counts January as her busiest month for new clients.?

The turn of the new year can also be a good time to try to salt away some extra money to pay for an attorney, says Worthley.?

You don't need to have all of your money affairs in order the moment you and your spouse begin discussing the dreaded D-word. You may want to start the year off with a fresh start by filing for divorce in January, but chances are you'll be lucky to be divorced before that year is up.?

"Here in California, if you didn't file by October, you weren't going to get divorced in the next year anyway," says Katzenstein. "And if you decide to divorce in January, it's not like you'll be divorced in February. It's going to be a process."?

Holiday music stops at Irving Berlin's NY door

NEW YORK (AP) ? A caroling group that for 35 years has performed the Irving Berlin classic "White Christmas" on Christmas Eve outside the New York City home where he lived has cancelled the tradition.

A group spokesman says the plans were abruptly cancelled last week for lack of space at the Manhattan home, which now serves as the Luxembourg consulate.

The tradition started in the late 1970s with one cabaret singer outside the home. In 1983, Berlin invited the singers inside for cocoa and cookies.

Berlin died in 1989 at age 99.

Luxembourg Consul-General Jean-Claude Knebeler tells the New York Post the ballroom where the group performed is filled with office equipment because the consulate expanded. He says he hopes the tradition resumes in another year in the consulate's library.

Preventing Childhood Obesity | Your Health Journal

overweighchildsmallHealthier children through exercise and better eating habits ? 5 things you can do to help your children prevent obesity

Years ago, parenting seemed simpler, without play dates or concerns that our children could be out alone and be safe. Over the years, parents became concerned about their childs safety and began to make their children?s playtimes more structured. Video games in the 70?s other than Pong were something you would play in an arcade, rather than in your home. Children naturally would go out and play until their parents called them in for dinner or because it got dark out.

The foods we eat play a part in why so many of our children are now overweight. Many of our processed foods require less work to prepare (there are calories burned while preparing food) and busy parents with their over reliance on fast foods and their high calorie content often did not realize that their children were taking in more than they were burning since their child, who sat in front of the ipad, or phone or dvd was eating and not moving.

We need to change the ethos of how we feed our children and how we allow them to socialize. Here are some helpful tips for parents of today?s children to help them stay physically fit and trim.

1. Fast food is okay, just know what you are giving them and understand the calorie count. Most of us never thought much about the big mac combo dinner or the happy meal. Because of current legislation, restaurants like McDonald?s are posting calorie counts for all their food. Who knew that an adult big mac combo would have 1483 calories, more than half of what we needed for the day. For your small child, do they need to eat a chicken McNugget combo with over 500 calories for the meal. By knowing what the calorie counts are, people who are informed can make better decisions for their families and their children. Knowing this, a parent may only get the sandwich with the diet coke and skip the fries with the extra calories which will cut the meals calorie count in half or less. Perhaps this may be why McDonald?s is now reporting softer year to year sales, now that people understand what they put in their bodies.

greenpeppers2. Children need to eat all types of foods, including vegetables. My daughter loves brussel sprouts because I introduced them to her. Salads are a natural. Meats of all types are fine but be mindful of the portions. Over-portioning, an American eating obsession (dine at a cheesecake factory to see overportioning) has become the norm. Unfortunately, children may overeat because their brain may say full way after they are. You can help avoid this by serving on a smaller plate. The full plate will indeed have a smaller portion and be more appropriate for them.

3. Avoid too much bread and the wrong types of carbs. We crave salt and starch. The food industry knows this and has helped us gain weight through numerous snack foods that we consume because they are addictive. While bread on a sandwich can be fine, a wrap may actually be a healthier and convenient alternative since the food does not tend to slip out. This is a great way for your child to eat a homemade sandwich in the car. Pizza and pasta?s are loaded with calories and we often over-portion them. Non complex carbohydrates such as this will be quickly turned into sugar in the body and will make you and your child tired later, decreasing their motivation to move. Keep those carbs in check.

4. Be careful of fruit juices. Fruit juice is full of sugar, especially the processed ones. High fructose corn syrup is often used because the government subsidizes it and it is cheap. It will also leave you feeling bloated and their is some evidence that this manufactured product may be responsible for the rise of diabetes and obesity in the United States over the past 30-40 years. Drinks with cane sugar taste better and are likely better for you but should be consumed in moderation because of the calorie counts. Diet drinks are likely better choices however, your children should get used to drinking water or ice tea that is unsweetened. These drinks are safer, many teas have antioxidant properties and drinking water or iced tea has no calories.

groupkidswbg5. Children should be allowed to socialize with other children and run around both inside and outside. They burn quite a few calories. Having them involved in sports is a great way to keep them physically in shape as they learn to develop relationships with their peers. If you live on a main road, and there are not many children around, often there are parks your children can go to and socialize with other neighborhood children. Over the years, outdoor activity has been replaced by sedentary game or video activity which is not the same. We were born to move and movement with less sitting as studies are now pointing out gives us a longer lifespan and a healthier life.

Iraq's northern Kurdish region stops oil exports

BAGHDAD (AP) ? An Iraqi Kurdish official said on Tuesday that the country's self-ruled northern Kurdish region has suspended oil exports over a payment row with Baghdad, a development that could add to already souring relations between the Kurds and the Arab-led central government.

Since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, the Kurds have unilaterally struck more than 50 deals with foreign oil companies, even though Baghdad says they have no right to do so. In 2011, the two sides reached a tentative deal by which the Kurds send the oil to Baghdad, which sells it, and pays 50 percent of the revenues to the developers to reimburse the development costs.

In April, the Kurds halted exports of around 100,000 barrels a day, saying that Baghdad had made only two payments under the agreement and had failed to pay $1.5 billion they say they were owed.

Four months later, the Kurds agreed to restart exports as a goodwill gesture. That allowed the two sides to reach a new agreement under which Baghdad would pay 1 trillion Iraqi dinars (about $848 million) to the companies in September.

However, Ali Hussein Balo, the advisor of the Kurdish Ministry of Natural Resources, said Baghdad sent only 650 billion Iraqi dinars (about $550 million) and withheld the rest. That prompted the Kurds' latest move.

"The region has found itself forced to halt the oil exports as Baghdad didn't fulfill a commitment it made in the September agreement in regard to payment," Balo told The Associated Press over the phone from the self-ruled region's capital, Irbil.

He said the Kurdish region of Iraq was exporting around 180,000 barrels a day before recently starting to decrease the shipments. He didn't say when exactly exports were halted but said it was in the past few days.

Faisal Abdullah, the spokesman for Iraq's deputy prime minister for energy affairs, confirmed that the full amount wasn't paid. He said the payments were suspended because the Kurds were pumping less than the 200,000 barrels a day they had pledged. He wouldn't give more details.

The latest move could dash Iraq's hopes to pump 3.7 million barrels a day and to export 2.9 million barrels a day next year. Daily production last month averaged around 3.2 million barrels and daily exports averaged 2.62 million.

Iraq sits atop the world's fourth largest proven reserves of conventional crude, about 143.1 billion barrels, and oil revenues make up 95 percent of its budget.

In addition to the dispute over development oil resources, the Kurds and the central government in Baghdad have been in a long-running dispute over lands claimed by the Kurds and power-sharing. Along with Sunni Arabs, the Kurds accuse the country's Shiite Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki of consolidating power in his hands and marginalizing political opponents.

Separately, Iraq and neighboring Jordan have agreed to speed efforts to build a pipeline to export Iraqi oil through the Jordanian Red Sea port of Aqaba, according to Jordan's Petra news agency.

The deal calls for an oil pipeline that would have a capacity to export one million barrels a day, according to the news agency and al-Maliki's office. The two sides signed an economic cooperation agreement that includes the pipeline project during a brief visit by al-Maliki to Jordan on Monday.

They also agreed to boost the capacity of a natural gas pipeline to supply Jordan with additional Iraqi gas. In addition, Iraq said it could raise the amount of crude oil it exports for Jordanian domestic use, and will double to 60,000 tons the amount of heavy fuel it exports to Jordan monthly, according to Petra.

Violent demonstrations broke out in Jordan last month after the government removed subsidies to offset $5 billion in losses from a rising fuel bill. Heating and cooking gas prices have jumped sharply since. To help, al-Maliki's Shiite-led government last month announced a one-time gift of 100,000 barrels of oil to Sunni Muslim Jordan.

Rock Stars, Dying Early To Be Famous | Psych Central News

By Janice Wood Associate News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on December 23, 2012

Rock Stars, Dying Early To Be Famous Successful solo rock and pop stars are twice as likely to die early as those in a band, according to new research.

The researchers also found that rock stars who died from drug or alcohol misuse were more likely to have had a difficult or abusive childhood.

For the study, the researchers included 1,489 North American and European rock and pop stars over a 50-year period between 1956 (Elvis Presley) and 2006 (Regina Spektor, The Arctic Monkeys, and Snow Patrol).

Their successes were determined from international polls and top 40 chart hits, while details of their personal lives and childhoods were drawn from a range of music and official websites, published biographies, and anthologies, the researchers explain.

During the 50-year period, 137 (9.2 percent) famous rock stars died. The average age of death was 45 for North American stars and 39 for those from Europe.

The gap in life expectancy between rock and pop stars and the general population widened consistently until 25 years after fame had been achieved, after which death rates began to approach those of the general population ? but only for European stars.

Solo performers were around twice as likely to die early as those in a band, whether they were European (9.8 percent solo vs 5.4 percent in a band) or North American (22.8 percent vs 10.2 percent).

The researchers speculate that the peer support offered by bandmates may be protective. In other words, the social support of friends can help alleviate the stress and loneliness of touring on the road.

While gender and the age at which fame was reached did not influence life expectancy, ethnicity did, with those from non-white backgrounds more likely to die early, according to the study.

The chances of survival increased among those achieving fame after 1980, researchers noted.

Nearly half of those who died as a result of drugs, alcohol, or violence had at least one unfavorable factor in their childhoods, compared with one in four of those dying of other causes.

Unfavorable factors included physical, sexual, or emotional abuse; living with a chronically depressed, suicidal, mentally or physically ill person; living with a substance abuser; having a close relative in prison; and coming from a broken home or one in which domestic violence occurred.

Four out of five dead stars with more than one unfavorable childhood factor died from substance misuse or violence-related causes, according to the study.

A career as a rock star may be attractive to those escaping an unhappy childhood, but it may also provide the resources to feed a predisposition to unhealthy or risky behaviors, say the researchers.

?Pop/rock stars are among the most common role models for children, and surveys suggest that growing numbers aspire to pop stardom,? they write in the study, which was published in the online journal BMJ Open.

?A proliferation of TV talent shows and new opportunities created by the Internet can make this dream appear more achievable than ever. It is important they [children] recognize that substance use and risk-taking may be rooted in childhood adversity rather than seeing them as symbols of success.?

How To Link Chase Business And Personal Credit Cards Online ...

Posted by The Weekly Flyer |

A number of people realize the benefits of the Chase Ultimate Rewards program. This is the rewards program from Chase that allows customers to earn rewards that can be transferred into a number of airline and hotel partners.

You can earn Chase Ultimate Rewards with both personal credit cards, business credit cards and online shopping. I recently picked up another Chase card, but this time the business card. I?immediately?remembered that the cards cannot be linked online under the same user ID. This is important, because once the accounts are linked online, customers can see both credit card online statements in the same place. This reduces the number of account usernames and passwords you need to remember.

First of all, Chase has said on a number of occasions that users cannot link a business card and a personal card online. Instead they must call chase to have the accounts linked together under one user ID. Following a few simple steps will have your accounts linked online in no time.

Steps To Link Chase Business And Personal Cards Online

It is important to note, that the combined User ID has to be the one linked to the Business Card. So to get started with linking your business and personal cards, start with the first step below.

  1. Enroll your Business Credit Card user ID online at Chase to set up a user ID
  2. Then call Chase customer service at 800-945-2028 or 800-493-3319 and ask to have your personal user ID merged with your Business Card user ID
  3. You?ll be connected you to the internet department
  4. They?ll verify your business card information and personal card information
  5. They will ask a series of personal security questions to verify who you are
  6. Log off, log on with personal account and new password

Chase Ink Plus Account Post Linking

Steps To Transfer Ultimate Rewards Account Balances

At this point your business and personal cards should be linked under one user ID online. You?ll be able to see both cards under one log in ID, but the Chase Ultimate Rewards accounts will remain separate. So to get these points balances merged, you?ll need to call a business card specialist each time you?d like to have your point balances merged.

  1. Provide the business card specialist both of your account numbers
  2. Provide the specialist the amount of points you?d like to transfer between accounts

Bottom Line

If you have a Chase personal and business card linking them online will allow you to view both statements. Unfortunately, it?doesn?t?appear that business and personal Ultimate Reward accounts can be merged into one?permanently?at this time.

Memorial service for Sen. Inouye held in Hawaii

HONOLULU (AP) ? The late Sen. Daniel Inouye was remembered Sunday as an American hero whose legacy as a war veteran and longtime senator would be felt across Hawaii for years to come.

The memorial service at Honolulu's National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific was attended by about 1,000 people, including President Barack Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Hawaii's congressional delegation and a number of other senators, cabinet secretaries and other dignitaries.

"Daniel was the best senator among us all," Reid told those assembled, adding later: "Whenever we needed a noble man to lean on, we turned to Sen. Dan Inouye. He was fearless."

The cemetery, a strikingly beautiful site located in an extinct volcano, is the final resting place to thousands of World War II veterans. More than 400 members of the storied Japanese-American 442nd Regimental Combat Team ? of which Inouye was a part ? are buried at the site.

Adm. Samuel Locklear, commander of the Navy's U.S. Pacific Command, said this also will be Inouye's final resting place.

"We have lost an irreplaceable American," he said.

Several 442nd veterans attended the Sunday morning service, the latest in a number of tributes and honors for Inouye following the 88-year-old's Dec. 17 death from respiratory complications.

Buses that brought people to the service flashed the words "MAHALO Senator Daniel K. Inouye" ? using the Hawaiian word for thank you.

A 19-gun cannon salute was fired as Inouye's coffin arrived at the cemetery. The service also featured a flyover by F-22 military jets and the playing of "Taps" by Democratic Sen. Jon Tester of Montana.

Inouye's widow, Irene, who was seated with the president and first lady Michelle Obama in the front row, dabbed her eyes as a band of bagpipes and drums band played "Danny Boy."

Inouye was the first Japanese-American elected to both houses of Congress and the second-longest serving senator in U.S. history, at 50 years.

He was a high school senior in Honolulu on Dec. 7, 1941, when he watched dozens of Japanese planes fly toward Pearl Harbor and other Oahu military bases to begin a bombing that changed the course of world events.

He volunteered for a special U.S. Army unit of Japanese-Americans and lost his right arm in a battle with Germans in Italy. That scratched his dream of becoming a surgeon and he went to law school and into politics instead.

"He was a shining star of the greatest generation," fellow Hawaii Democratic Sen. Daniel Akaka said at the service.

Akaka, who served with Inouye for 36 years, also highlighted Inouye's role in steering federal money to build roads, schools, housing and other infrastructure in Hawaii over the decades, from the beginning of statehood.

"Dan Inouye is Hawaii, and Hawaii is Dan Inouye," Akaka said.

Inouye's chief of staff, Jennifer Sabas, said Inouye was calm, in control and giving out instructions until the very end. Then, "he penned 'aloha,' and went on to a better place," she said.

"Aloha, boss," she said in closing, as she stood beside his flag-draped coffin.

Several services have already been held in Washington and in Hawaii for Inouye. He lay in state at both the U.S. Capitol Rotunda on Thursday and the Hawaii state Capitol on Saturday. A public service is planned for Friday on Kauai. His burial is expected to be a private, family event.

Obama eulogized Inouye during a service at Washington's National Cathedral on Friday, saying that Inouye's presence during the Watergate hearings helped show him what could be possible in his own life.

The president arrived early Saturday in Honolulu for his annual Christmas family vacation. He made a brief visit to the grave of his grandfather, World War II veteran Stanley Dunham, after Sunday's service.

Boeing engineers use spuds to improve in-air Wi-Fi

CHICAGO (AP) -- If the wireless Internet connection during your holiday flight seems more reliable than it used to, you could have the humble potato to thank.

While major airlines offer in-flight Wi-Fi on many flights, the signal strength can be spotty. Airlines and aircraft makers have been striving to improve this with the growing use of wireless devices and the number of people who don't want to be disconnected, even 35,000 feet up.

Engineers at Chicago-based Boeing Co. used sacks of potatoes as stand-ins for passengers as they worked to eliminate weak spots in in-flight wireless signals. They needed full planes to get accurate results during signal testing, but they couldn't ask people to sit motionless for days while data was gathered.

"That's where potatoes come into the picture," Boeing spokesman Adam Tischler said.

It turns out that potatoes ? because of their water content and chemistry ? absorb and reflect radio wave signals much the same way as the human body does, making them suitable substitutes for airline passengers.

"It's a testament to the ingenuity of these engineers. They didn't go in with potatoes as the plan," Tischler said.

Recapping the serendipitous path that led to better onboard wireless, Tischler said a member of the research team stumbled across an article in the Journal of Food Science describing research in which 15 vegetables and fruits were evaluated for their dielectric properties, or the way they transmit electric force without conduction.

Its conclusions led the Boeing researchers to wonder if potatoes might serve just as well as humans during their own signal testing. Despite some skepticism, they ended up buying 20,000 pounds of them.

Video and photos of the work, which started in 2006, show a decommissioned airplane loaded with row upon row of potato sacks that look like large, lumpy passengers. The sacks sit eerily still in the seats as the engineers collect data on the strength of wireless signals in various spots.

The Boeing engineers added some complicated statistical analysis and the result was a proprietary system for fine tuning Internet signals so they would be strong and reliable wherever a laptop was used on a plane.

Boeing says the system also ensures Wi-Fi signals won't interfere with the plane's sensitive navigation and communications equipment.

"From a safety standpoint, you want to know what the peak signals are, what's the strongest signal one of our communications and navigation systems might see from a laptop or 150 laptops or 350 laptops," Boeing engineer Dennis Lewis explains in a video.

In a nod to the humor in using a tuber to solve a high-tech problem, researchers dubbed the project Synthetic Personnel Using Dialectic Substitution, or SPUDS.

The company says better Wi-Fi signals can be found already on three Boeing aircraft models flown by major airlines: 777, 747-8 and the 787 Dreamliner.

Hostess expects to split up snack cakes in sale

NEW YORK (AP) ? Twinkies, Wonder Bread and Devil Dogs are likely to return to shelves in coming months, but probably not under the same owners.

Hostess Brands Inc. said in bankruptcy court Friday that it's narrowing down the bids it received for its brands and expects to sell off its snack cakes and bread to separate buyers. The testimony came from an investment banker for Hostess, which is in the process of liquidating.

A likely suitor has emerged for the namesake Hostess brand, which includes Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Ho Hos, along with Dolly Madison cakes, which includes Coffee Cakes and Zingers, said Joshua Scherer of Perella Weinberg Partners. He said another viable bid was made for Drake's cakes, which includes Devil Dogs, Funny Bones and Yodels. That bidder also wants to buy the Drake's plant in Wayne, N.J., which Scherer said is the country's only kosher bakery plant.

Additional bids have been submitted for its bread brands, which include Wonder and Home Pride. Hostess expects to file binding "stalking horse" bids for many of its brands in January. Those filings would be followed by a four-week auction process to allow competing bids. Scherer said the auctions could be very active for some of the brands, given the number of parties that have expressed interest. Sales could be completed by as early as mid-March.

About 30 plants could also be sold with the brands, Scherer said, with six plants, several warehouses and a fleet of trucks likely to be closed or scrapped.

Hostess has hired a firm Hilco to act as a sales agent for those additional assets; the firm will also give Hostess a $30 million loan to maintain operations during its liquidation, which is expected to take about a year.

Hostess, based in Irving, Texas, has said potential buyers include major packaged food companies and national retailers, such as big-box retailers and supermarkets. The company has stressed it needs to move quickly in the sale process to capitalize on the outpouring of nostalgia sparked by its bankruptcy.

To begin winding down its operations late last month, Hostess had said it would retain about 3,000 workers to shutter plants and perform other tasks. On Friday, an attorney for Hostess said in court that figure was down to about 1,100 employees. The liquidation of Hostess ultimately means the loss of about 18,000 jobs, not including those shed in the years leading to the company's failure. CEO Greg Rayburn, who was hired as a restructuring expert earlier this year, is earning $125,000 a month.

The company's demise came after years of management turmoil and turnover, with workers saying the company failed to invest in updating its snack cakes and breads. Hostess filed for its second Chapter 11 bankruptcy in less than a decade this January, citing steep costs associated with its unionized workforce.

The company was able to reach a new contract agreement with its largest union, the Teamsters, the bakers union rejected the terms and went on strike Nov. 9. A week later, Hostess announced its plans to liquidate, saying the strike crippled its ability to maintain normal production. Although Hostess sales have been declining over the years, they still clock in at between $2.3 billion and $2.4 billion a year.

When asked how much the brands are expected to fetch from buyers, Scherer said he would rather not say.

Instagram co-founder: Sorry, let's go back to the old advertising policy

1 day

After dealing with non-stop outrage ever since it proposed changes to its privacy policy and terms of service on Monday???and despite making some clarifications about the changes???Instagram is throwing in the towel. Back to the old policy ... at least in one regard.

"Because of the feedback we have heard from you," Instagram co-founder?Kevin Systrom wrote in a blog post, "we are reverting [the] advertising section to the original version that has been in effect since we launched the service in October 2010."

The problem with the new advertising policy was that users understood it to mean that Instagram would let advertisers snatch up user-posted images for ads. Many users?wondered if this would mean that they are surrendering their ownership of images by posting them to the service. On Tuesday, Systrom attempted to clarify that this wouldn't be the case. "Instagram users own their content and Instagram does not claim any ownership rights over your photos," he wrote.

As NBC News' Helen Popkin initially pointed out, Instagram never suggested that it would take ownership of your content in the first place. It just sounded as if it was reserving the right to sell your photos, based on the language of the now-abandoned "new" terms of service:?

Instagram does not claim ownership of any Content that you post on or through the Service. Instead, you hereby grant to Instagram a non-exclusive, fully paid and royalty-free, transferable, sub-licensable, worldwide license to use the Content that you post on or through the Service, except that you can control who can view certain of your Content and activities on the Service as described in the Service's Privacy Policy...

Now while things did sound a bit shady, Systrom writes that "Instagram has no intention of selling your photos." Innocent intentions or not, it's back to the drawing board for parts of Instagram's terms of service now. "[R]ather than obtain permission from you to introduce possible advertising products we have not yet developed," Systrom explains, "we are going to take the time to complete our plans, and then come back to our users and explain how we would like for our advertising business to work."

And as far as the mass confusion over the policy changes goes? Systrom is "sorry for that" and "focused on making it right."

California meteorite reveals secrets

Recently published research describes a collection of meteorite pieces that landed in California in April. The study came about through a group effort dubbed "crowdsourcing" by the lead scientist. ??

By Elizabeth Howell,?Space.com / December 20, 2012

A handful of Sutter's Hill meteorite fragments collected April 24, 2012, two days after the fall. Two months later, the scientists reported having 77 meteorite fragments.

Barely eight months after a fireball lit up California and Nevada skies, the first scientific paper is out examining the meteorites it left behind.

"It was done very quickly," said Peter Jenniskens, a meteor researcher who suddenly found himself managing a small army of volunteers when the Sutter's Mill meteor broke up April 22.

Dozens of scientists jumped to Jenniskens' aid as he?searched for meteorite fragments. But less publicized will be the volunteers who phoned in reports of meteorites, or sent in?pictures and video of the fireball?by e-mail.

Jenniskens' team?commandeered an airship?to search for fragments. Meanwhile, the team caught a lucky break ? Doppler radar information from nearby weather stations showed the track of the meteorite. Adding this data to the pictures and video sent in by volunteers, the scientists could reconstruct the impacting asteroid's early history. [Photos: Fireball Drops Meteorites On California]

According to Jenniskens, the paper, to be published Friday (Dec. 21) in the journal Science,?was made possible by the mass crowdsourcing effort that enabled a large amount of data to be collected in a short time.

"It's all very important, and it's fantastic how this came together," said Jenniskens, a meteor astronomer at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). "For me, it was personally very exciting."

Peeling back the years

The Sutter's Mill meteorite turned out to be a rare type ? a?carbonaceous chondrite?that contains information about the early stages of the solar system. The meteorite pieces originated in a space rock that was perhaps as much as 3.3 yards (3 meters) across.

A space rock is called an asteroid or meteoroid until it hits the Earth's atmosphere. The resulting fireball is then called a meteor until it hits the ground, at which point it is dubbed a meteorite.

The asteroid that would later impact California orbited the sun in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, making about three trips around our star in the time it takes Jupiter to orbit once. Such a ratio, known as a resonance, is common in the solar system ? some of?Jupiter's moons are in resonance?with each other, for example.

The asteroid's resonance was a little "off" from a perfect 3 to 1 ratio. At some point, Jupiter's strong gravity muscled the asteroid out of its normal orbit and sent it on a trip to the inner solar system. This pushed the asteroid into a new orbit that brought it in as far as Mercury's orbit when it got closest to the sun.

How to Manage Startup Application in Windows 8?

Thursday, December 20, 2012 5:37 pm, Posted by Priyanka 0 | Computer

Topics: Windows 8

Windows startup timings depend upon the number of programs activated at the time of startup. When the computer starts it uses RAM and CPU or startup applications use Ram and CPU during the startup. The startup programs are also responsible behind the slow performance of your system. If the number of program at the startup increases, the more is the time taken by the computer to boot up properly. Here is the tutorial how you can configure the startup application in your Windows 8 PC.

manage startup applications windows 8

As discussed earlier about the changes made in Windows 8, many users find difficulty in looking for certain programs or Apps in the new OS. In order to configure Windows 8, you need to add or disable some of the startup programs or application. Follow the tutorial to configure the startup applications.

Google Has Figured Out How To Track You Even ... - Business Insider

Google has a new advertising product, called "Conversions API," that allows advertisers to track your offline purchases and match them to your online behavior.

Until now, advertisers have inferred that anyone searching for, say, "Chevrolet" is likely shopping for a car. Google thus displays Chevy ads -- or ads for competitors -- to anyone who inputs that search request.

But advertisers have loads of their own offline data from existing customers that they have not been able to use to target search ads. Conversions API allows those advertisers to upload phone numbers and in-store purchase data and use that information to target search ads through DoubleClick, Google's search ad system.

Google's announcement was thin on details. It says advertisers can now "upload new conversions to account for in-store transactions, call-tracking, or other offline activities, or edit existing conversions to account for discounts, returns, credit, or fraud."

That sounds a lot like Facebook's Custom Audiences tool, which allows advertises to upload their own customers lists of email addresses and phone numbers, and serve ads targeting those lists. The new Google product thus competes head to head with Facebook's.

Google doesn't specifically say this, but it's likely that data from those conversion lists will be blinded and delivered anonymously in aggregate. Neither the advertiser nor Google will be able to track you individually. All they will know is that of the total number of phone numbers targeted, a certain percentage saw ads and/or acted on them.

From your point of view, however, Google might start to feel a little spooky. If you bought a T shirt at The Gap in the mall with your credit card, you could start seeing a lot more Gap ads online later, suggesting jeans that go with that shirt.

We've reached out to Google for more information, and we'll publish an update when they get back to us.

Westboro Baptist Church Web Security Provider To Donate Proceeds To Charity

Anonymous, in its continuing battle with ?God Hates Fags? group Westboro Baptist Church, has managed to convince the security provider who was protecting the church from online attacks to donate proceeds to charity.

The hacktivist collective attacked the anti-gay organisation after it said it would picket the Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, preaching its anti-gay message to the grieving families of 20 children and six adults killed there last Friday.

Whilst certain hacktivists were able to leak details of Westboro Baptist Church members, and hack their Twitter accounts, Anonymous came up against solid protection of the group?s websites in the form of Black Lotus, a Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) protection vendor.

Anonymous called on them to remove their protection, having organised a campaign against those providing services to Westboro Baptist Church.

But as tension grew between the two sides, Black Lotus offered an olive branch, saying it would donate all the proceeds it receives from the Westboro Baptist Church to charity. The money will be going to various groups supporting the Newtown community.

?Our social commitments shall be long term, some now and some later,? Black Lotus said over its Twitter feed. It said it was asking opinions on who to donate to before talking more publicly about the issue.

?[We] will give very serious consideration in ensuring that our donations have a strong impact,? Jeffrey Lyon, information systems security professional at Black Lotus, told Wikinews. The United Way organisation looks likely to receive donations from Black Lotus soon.

Anonymous has had a turbulent month. Yesterday, one of its key Twitter accounts, @YourAnonNews, was suspended from Twitter, with some reporting it was due to the battle with Westboro Baptist Church.

The account has hundreds of thousands of followers and is used to relay news to members of the hacktivist collective. Twitter told TechWeekEurope it would not comment on specific accounts.

When the account came back online, a tweet claimed Twitter had suspended @YourAnonNews for sharing personal information. It appeared the personal information that was shared belonged to Shirley Phelps-Roper, a spokesperson of the Westboro Baptist Church, whose Twitter account was hacked earlier this week.

Non-partisan study: Boehner's "Plan B" cuts millionaire taxes

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The latest Republican offer to resolve the U.S. "fiscal cliff" standoff keeps tax rates low for households making less than $1 million a year, but millionaires get the benefit of lower taxes too, according to a non-partisan study released on Wednesday.

The analysis by the Tax Policy Center found that Republican House Speaker John Boehner's so-called Plan B provides an average tax cut of about $108,000 for households making more than $1 million, when compared to the rates this group would face if the country went over the cliff.

Taxpayers earning between $50,000 and $75,000 a year get an average tax cut of about $1,400, according to the analysis.

The reason is that tax rates are imposed on a marginal basis. A taxpayer making $1.1 million, for example, would only pay the higher rate on $100,000 of their income, enjoying the same break as lower earners on income below the million-dollar level.

The Republican proposal, which is set for a vote on Thursday, extends the lower tax rates on household income below $1 million.

Income above the $1 million threshold would be taxed at a 39.6 percent tax rate, up from the current top rate of 35 percent.

Boehner and President Barack Obama are locked in a standoff to avert some $600 billion in tax hikes and spending cuts looming at year's end, known as the fiscal cliff.

Obama's latest offer would extend the lower tax rates on household income below $400,000 a year, raising top rates to 39.6 percent on income above that level.

$10M Ford Fund project to boost Southwest Detroit

Detroit ? The Ford Motor Co. Fund is launching a $10 million program called Operation Brighter Future in Southwest Detroit that will include a community center, a Gleaners Community Food Bank center and other community services.

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing and Ford Chief Operating Officer Mark Fields on Tuesday announced the partnership between the Ford Fund, the city and the Mexicantown Community Development Corp.

The Ford Resource and Engagement Center will open at the previously vacant Mexicantown Mercado Building on Bagley Avenue.

The building will house cultural and job training programs, and a Gleaners center.

"This building ? has sat empty for several years," Bing said Tuesday. "The new Ford Resource and Engagement Center will certainly add to the revitalization efforts of Detroit."

Ford will provide funding for local nonprofits to run those programs and with resources to operate the facility for at least four years.

Ford also will adopt the Patton Recreation Center in the same area and provide art- and sports-related programs for area youths.

The Ford Fund will additionally provide funding for a "Camp Brighter Future" at Patton Recreation Center, which will accommodate as many as 90 young people. Ford also will offer some scholarships for the camp.

"We know the importance of building strong communities everywhere," Fields said.

Ford is also donating two F-Series truck chassis, which will be turned into new ambulances for the city.

"One of the biggest complaints that I get on the public safety side is our response time from an EMS standpoint," Bing said.

"Because of the city's financial difficulties, we've been unable for years to make the necessary investments to get new vehicles or even maintain the ones that we have."

Operation Brighter Future also will provide funding for a summer youth employment program and offer support for Greening of Detroit, a not-for-profit organization that aims to reforest the Motor City.
