PST: Late own-goal torpedoes Wigan vs. Spurs

Under Roberto Mart?nez, Wigan Athletic have accrued a reputation for late season sprints that ensure Premier League survival. This year, however, you have to wonder if their luck has run out, with a late own goal costing them full points today against Tottenham.

The Latics got off to a bad start, with goalkeeper Joel?s attempted clearance in the ninth minute careening off Gareth Bale for the game?s opening goal. But they responded. Two minutes later, Emmerson Boyce?s header had them even, and shortly after halftime, Callum McManaman?s shot from well beyond the edge of the box gave Wigan a 2-1 lead.

But just before full time, Boyce gave his goal back. Amid a late push from Spurs, a ball sent across the six by Aaron Lennon went past Bale, off Boyce?s shins, and into the Wigan net, costing the Latics two points.

Had they held on, Wigan would have been out of the drop. They?d have equaled Aston Villa?s 34 points with a better goal difference (what would have been -22 versus -27). Instead, they stay 18th, albeit two points back instead of three.

Hosting Sunderland on Monday, Villa have a chance to gain ground on Wigan, though the Latics will have their match-in-hand back by the time the round?s over. However, if Villa?s suddenly five up instead of three, Wigan not only need full points in their makeup game, they also likely need to beat Villa on the season?s last day to win survival.

That May 19 match in Wigan?s shaping up to be one of the more dramatic in Premier League history, but had the Latic?s form been rewarded in recent weeks, they may have been able to avoid this fate. They played poorly last weekend at West Ham, but in the previous round they outplayed Manchester City at Eastlands only to leave Manchester with a 1-0 loss. Today they played the key part in both Spurs goals, costing them two crucial points.

It?s a woulda-coulda game that every 18th place team can play. Wigan had 34 rounds to avoid this situation, one in which they find themselves every year. Yet here we are, again, with the Latics pushing their luck once more. At some point, they?re going to hit a wammie.

Wigan is in the middle of their typical push, but the breaks aren?t going their way. As a result, that push isn?t being reflected in the table, forcing us to ask whether if it can be considered a push at all.

Maybe this is the year the Latics? unlikely run finally ends.

Paul McCartney and Wings: Hi Hi Hi

This is a good song. No one is saying that you should listen to it while in any type of altered mental state whatsoever. It's just a good song. The Wings recorded it in 1972 and it got pretty popular, though the BBC was turned off by some of its lyrics. Paul apparently had this to say about their concerns:

Jessica Simpson's Parents Are Splitting Up Her Life Insurance ...

joe tina simpson splitting life insurance

Remember that sneaky, sneaky, MAJOR life insurance policy Joe Simpson took out on his daughter?

Well, turns out he WON'T get to keep it to himself!

In his divorce with Tina Simpson, Joe will have to split Jessica Simpson?s life insurance policy in half.

Guess keeping it secret didn't work!

The exes have finalized their divorce, and it seems they?re keeping things pretty equal in the end.

Not only will the $4.5 million life insurance policy be divided equally, but the parents will also split interest on Jessica and Ashlee Simpson?s management fees!

They?ve also figured out a satisfactory way to split up other money and properties as Joe will keep half of their Sherman Oaks house, all his personal effects and bank accounts, the 2012 Mercedes SLS and 2011 Mercedes S63, and a many stocks.

Meanwhile, Tina gets the house in Waco, over ten bank accounts, a 2010 Range Rover Sport, 2011 Porsche 997 coupe, and much more!

Considering how nasty this split appeared to be at first, we?re happy to hear it?s all settled and finalized.

We just wonder what Jessica thinks about the life insurance policy!

Espinosa was a former liaison between Mexico's Sinaloa cartel and Colombia's Norte Valle cartel. He pleaded guilty in 2009 to cocaine trafficking charges.

A statement signed by Avila, who was known as the "Queen of the Pacific," says she provided money to Espinosa for travel and lodging so he could evade arrest by authorities between 2002 and 2004.

Researchers Find Hormone That Grows Insulin-Producing Cells

A microscopy image of a rat pancreas shows the insulin-making cells in green.

Masur/Wikimedia.org

The work is only in mice so far, but it sure is intriguing.

A newly found hormone revs up production of cells that make insulin ? the very kind that people with advanced diabetes lack.

Harvard scientists, reporting the discovery Thursday in Cell, call the hormone betatrophin because it stimulates the production of beta cells in the pancreas. These cells make insulin, which the body needs to control blood sugar. ("Trophin" comes from "nourishing" in Greek.)

When researchers turned on the betatrophin gene in the livers of diabetic lab mice, the number of beta cells in their pancreas glands tripled within 10 days and their blood sugar went down.

Humans have betatrophin genes too, as do all mammals. So Harvard's Doug Melton thinks he's got his hands on something that just might get at a root cause of diabetes.

"I'm very excited about it," Melton tells Shots. "It isn't every day one discovers a new hormone ? especially one that affects the cell I'm obsessed with, the beta cell."

He's not alone. Mary-Elizabeth Patti of the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, who wasn't involved in the work but is familiar with the findings, also calls the discovery exciting.

"I'm sure this will stimulate a lot of work to look at effects of this protein and rapidly investigate whether this could be a new approach to treating diabetes," Patti tells Shots.

Human experiments with betatrophin are several years off ? perhaps five years, Melton guesses.

First, researchers need to make the hormone in large amounts, then show it works consistently and safely in animals. But at this early stage, hopes are running high.

"If I'm right," Melton says, "you would inject this hormone once a month or once a year, give yourself new beta cells, and they would then very accurately control blood sugars by instantaneously producing just the right amount of insulin. They should reduce the complications of your disease because you're back to the normal control of your blood sugar."

Patti cautions that "it's rare there's a single unique hormone that does everything." And she wonders whether people with Type 2 diabetes, who are resistant to insulin, make betatrophin in normal amounts.

"If someone is insulin-resistant, why wouldn't he make more of this protein and respond to it?" Patti asks. "The question is: Do diabetics make sufficient amounts of this hormone or not? And if they do, do they respond to it or are they resistant to it?"

Melton acknowledges that his scenario of curing diabetes with periodic doses of betatrophin "is the dream of what would happen."

"Let's also remember that at the beginning of new discovery, people like me are always very optimistic," Melton says. "I'm also cognizant of the fact that it could get complicated." He notes that leptin, another hormone, was supposedly going to cure obesity when it was discovered in 1994. But it hasn't worked out that way.

For the past decade, Melton and his colleagues at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute have been pursuing a very different diabetes-cure strategy: tricking stem cells to morph into pancreatic beta cells. That work continues, and he hopes in the next year or so to report "that we're making bucket loads" of beta cells derived from stem cells.

But meanwhile, the group decided to explore what happens when mice are given a synthetic peptide, developed some years back by the firm Novo Nordisk, that blocks insulin receptors. Would mice given this peptide, called S961, compensate by making more insulin?

"We thought the mouse's beta cells would either work harder to produce more insulin or really boost beta cell replication," Melton says.

Luckily for them, mice given S961 promptly started making more beta cells. So then the researchers looked in various tissues ? fat, liver, muscle, brain ? to see what genes were turned on.

"What popped out near the top of the list of the most abundantly activated genes was this gene that no one had really studied, that we called betatrophin," Melton says.

Within a day or so after its release, the hormone boosts beta cell replication up to thirtyfold. And it doesn't seem to do anything else. That's important because it lowers the risk that betatrophin would cause unwanted side effects or even, in the worst case, promote cancer.

One intriguing discovery so far is that the betatrophin gene gets turned on in pregnant mice. That makes sense, since pregnancy requires a boost in insulin to enable the mother to keep blood sugar levels normal in the face of an increased carbohydrate load.

The Harvard researchers don't know yet if pregnant humans produce more betatrophin, but they plan to find out.

They're also planning an ambitious agenda of follow-on experiments. First, they want to figure out how betatrophin works and look for the receptor on pancreas and possibly other cells that the hormone activates. "We don't need the receptor" to pursue treatment possibilities, Melton says, "but we would like to have it."

Second, they want to make betatrophin in large amounts for further mouse and eventually human experiments.

Third, they want to give betatrophin to rodents with diabetes ? not just genetically induced disease, but diabetes caused by overfeeding animals to make them obese, the way that Type 2 diabetes is caused in humans.

They hope that giving such animals betatrophin will not only normalize their blood sugars, but also prevent the heart, blood vessel, nerve and immune system complications that shorten the lives of people with diabetes. Only that would be a true cure.

By the way, Melton thinks that betatrophin might prevent Type 1 diabetes, too, the type that generally arises earlier in life after an overactive immune system destroys beta cells.

To do that, you'd have to identify people at risk of developing Type 1 diabetes ? for instance, because a sibling already had it ? and monitor them for signs they were getting it too, then giving betatrophin along with immune-suppressing drugs to halt the disease in its tracks.

Melton ticks off the pluses and minuses at this early stage. "On the positive side, betatrophin is very robust in its activity, it's very specific to beta cells, it improves animals' handling of blood sugar, and the human gene for it is virtually identical to the mouse gene," Melton says.

"On the negative side, we don't know its mechanism of action and we haven't yet demonstrated its safety and efficacy in humans," he says.

There are enough positives at this point that betatrophin has already been licensed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a division of Johnson & Johnson, and a German biotech firm called Evotec, which already has 15 scientists working on betatrophin.

If Melton's wishes pan out, a percentage of the huge potential profits would go not to him, he says, but to Harvard and his lab.

Workplace Collaboration Service Convo Releases Updated iOS App With Redesigned News Feed And Comment System

Screenshot_4_24_13_7_04_AMThere are very few platforms that have something that you use on a daily basis, let alone on a minute-by-minute basis. Team communication platform service, Convo, is one of those for us at TechCrunch. Today, the company has released an update for its essential iOS app, which is something that we use here quite often to communicate about everything you can think of. Since using the service, our team has generated more than 100,000 interactions, averaging 1,200 of them a day, with 95 percent of our team present on the platform on those days. Its desktop version is in real time, acting like a threaded IRC chat. The service overall isn’t without its faults, but it’s difficult to build team and enterprise software that can make everyone happy. One of the top complaints that we had was about its iOS app, which was lacking proper iPhone 5 and retina support, along with some general usability issues. Today’s app udpate is all about speed, commenting and a slicker design that will help you get through all of the threaded discussions your team is having since you checked in last. The feed This is the most important part of Convo, especially when you’re on the go. In today’s update, you’re able to scan and refresh the main feed quickly, and when you tap on the comments for any given thread, they slide over from the right. This is a huge improvement from the previous version, which loaded the thread into a new page: That update alone will save time, as you can jump back and forth between threads that you’re participating in and make decisions on whether to get involved in one quicker. Additionally, you’ll be able to “Like” things, which is a passive way of saying that you’ve seen something or agree with something, depending on how your team uses it. Images are also clearer thanks to the retina support and complete overhaul of how they’re displayed. Depending on how you use the service, images could play a huge role in the conversation that you’re having. If it’s about a piece of artwork for your app, seeing images at the highest resolution possible is the only way that you’ll be able to make a decision on whether to use them or feedback that you might have for your designer. Some flights diverted from D/FW Airport to Dallas Love Field ...

American Airlines' planes sit last week at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport during flight delays unrelated to furloughs. (Louis DeLuca/The Dallas Morning News)

As many as nine flights were diverted today from the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport to Dallas Love Field because of weather and staffing issues related to automatic federal spending cuts, the Federal Aviation Administration said today.

A cold front that moved through the Dallas-Fort Worth area this morning also brought a change in wind direction, rain and mist, an FAA spokesman said. That required the D/FW Airport to ?put some airplanes into holding patterns while we switched the direction that planes land and take off.?

Update at 1:30 p.m.: American Airlines, American Eagle and United Airlines decided to divert some inbound flights to Dallas Love Field, said airport spokesman David Magana. Those flights parked at Love Field or refueled, but he didn?t know for how long.

Update at 2 p.m.: American said it diverted a handful of flights to Dallas Love Field today due to air traffic control issues at D/FW Airport. None of the American or American Eagle planes were sitting on the tarmac for more than three hours, which would trigger a fine under new consumer rules, said Matt Miller, a spokesman for Fort Worth-based American.

Update at 2 p.m.: ?On the whole, we aren?t experiencing any significant issues beyond normal ground-delay programs,? Miller said.

Update at 1:30 p.m.: All of those diverted flights returned to the D/FW Airport as of 12:30 p.m. today., Magana said.

Travelers at airports around the country have experienced flight delays since Sunday, when the FAA planned to start furloughing air traffic controllers every one day out of 10 as part of $85 billion in federal spending cuts this year. The FAA said about 10 percent of controllers at any facility are on furlough each day.

The FAA warned that air travelers could see a wide range of delays depending at U.S. airports because of employee furloughs.

The D/FW Airport and Dallas Love Field were not among airports where the FAA expected to see serious delays on a daily basis, but the agency said delays still could affect flight schedules depending on the time of day, the weather and traffic conditions at other airports.

In addition to the D/FW Airport, the FAA said staffing challenges created flight delays today at airports airports in Las Vegas and Los Angeles. The agency also expects delays at Newark and LaGuardia because of weather and wind.

The FAA said it will continue to work with the airlines throughout the day to minimize delays for travelers. It encourages passengers to check their flight status and to the FAA?s up-to-date airport delay information online.

The FAA attributed more than 1,200 flight delays nationwide yesterday to staffing shortages. In addition, more than 1,400 flights were delayed yesterday due to weather or other factors.

Google increases Chrome's security, singles out shady browser extensions

DNP Google increases Chrome's security, singles out shady browser extensions

We know Google isn't afraid to make it rain for the sake of Chrome's security, but today's provisions appear to be an inside job. Laying the smack down on toxic browser extensions, the company introduced a new set of security measures that label applications in violation of its safety guidelines as malware. These potential threats try to bypass the browser's silent installation blockers by manipulating its management settings. Once installed, the malicious software is enabled by default and cannot be removed or disabled from within Chrome. Google cautions that within a week people will begin seeing download alerts when attempting to install an identified threat. In the meantime, we suggest you start making plans to check out your current extensions just to be sure your setup has a clean bill of health.

Chill acquires sequel to "Birdemic," reviled cult classic

By Lucas Shaw

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Chill has secured exclusive digital distribution rights to "Birdemic 2: The Resurrection," the sequel to a cult classic that some dubbed the worst movie ever made.

Director James Ngyuen is in the middle of a multi-city tour that will bring his new film, in which eagles and vultures attacking Hollywood, to cities such as New York, San Francisco and London. Though Ngyuen had been speaking with other distributors suggesting more traditional release strategies, such as theatrical first and then DVD, Chill offered to make the film available just as the social buzz from the tour was kicking in.

"What better time to release it than when you've got word of mouth and social activity," Marc Hustvedt, head of entertainment at Chill, told The Wrap. "It runs like an extended crowdfunding campaign. The same dynamics are in play where you're posting regular updates, creating limited edition merchandise, telling a story and having the filmmakers participate in the process."

Chill, which last November transformed into a digital video storefront and on-demand site, has been staffing up in its marketing division. It will release signed posters and hand-puppets to fans of "Birdemic" after the film goes on sale Tuesday.

The film will be available exclusively on Chill for 90 days, selling for $9.99. It will then be available on iTunes and other digital platforms, with Chill netting a fraction of the revenue from those sales.

The company just hired George Rausch to oversee the distribution of its videos to other platforms, part of a series of hires better suited to the site's latest incarnation. Rausch joined the company from The Collective, a talent management and production company, where he oversaw theatrical and digital distribution for select films.

"A great film and great piece of entertainment is fluid; it needs to live in a lot of places," Hustvedt said. "To think Chill is the end-all-be-all is fallacy. Eventually it should be wide and widely distributed."

Johnson's free kick lifts Timbers by 'Quakes, 1-0

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? When Earthquakes forward Alan Gordon directed a slur at Will Johnson, the Timbers midfielder responded with the game-winning goal.

Johnson's goal in the 78th minute gave Portland a 1-0 win on Sunday night. It was their second straight victory, moving the team to 2-1-3 under new coach Caleb Porter.

Gordon was ejected in the second half after receiving a pair of yellow cards involving fouls on other players. But minutes earlier, he was seen on the television broadcast using a slur toward Johnson.

After the match, Gordon released a statement through the team.

"I would like to sincerely apologize to everyone who watched tonight's match on NBC Sports Network. The language I used came during a heated moment and does not reflect my feelings toward the gay and lesbian community. I made a mistake and I accept full responsibility for my actions," the statement read.

Johnson was diplomatic.

"I think it's probably better that I don't comment on that," he said. "It's a very sensitive matter. I'd prefer the league go through with their protocol."

It's standard procedure for Major League Soccer to review the video of matches that involve a red card.

Gordon was escorted from the locker room after the game by team personnel and did not speak with reporters after match.

The loss dropped the Earthquakes to 2-3-2.

Forward Steven Lenhart was back in San Jose's starting lineup after returning from a partially torn meniscus last weekend as a reserve. The striker missed San Jose's first five matches after offseason surgery. That meant the Earthquakes' so-called Bash Brothers ? Lenhart and Gordon ? were both starting for the first time this season.

But Gordon was sent off in the 68th minute after getting a second yellow card, for elbowing Timbers defender Mikael Silvestre in the face, causing a bloody lip. Gordon was also received a yellow in the 41st minute for a foul on Diego Chara.

Video replay appeared to show that Gordon directed a slur at Johnson a few minutes before his ejection. Such a comment would bring an automatic three-match suspension by MLS.

Some 10 minutes later, Johnson hit a free kick from just outside the penalty arc that sailed over the wall and past goalkeeper Jon Busch.

"It doesn't work every time," Johnson said. "But when it does, it's nice."

Earlier in the day, Porter had texted Johnson asking "Why don't you hit a free kick tonight?" The coach was floored when it happened.

"Everybody's going to talk about the free kick," Johnson said. "But it's really about the team."

The teams played to a scoreless draw in the first half. Portland missed an opportunity when Ryan Johnson's header was snagged in midair by Busch in the 43rd minute.

The Timbers dominated possession (62.6 percent) in the first half, but matched San Jose with just four shots. It was a physical match, as evidenced by the yellow cards. Four minutes after Chara was fouled by Gordon, Chara got a yellow card for a foul on Rafael Baca.

Following the game, Yallop questioned why officials waited to make the call to eject Gordon until after the video scoreboard had shown a replay, firing up the crowd at Jeld-Wen.

"You should let the officials call the game," he said, adding that he had not seen the replay.

Portland was without midfielder Diego Valeri, who was elbowed in the face last weekend against the Dynamo and only participated in light workouts this week because of the league's concussion protocol. The Timbers also lost defender David Horst to a fractured right tibia during the Houston game. He is out six months.

The Timbers also announced shortly before the game that defender Andrew Jean-Baptiste would not start because of a right adductor strain. Futty Danso started in his place.

Portland is 2-0-4 against the Earthquakes. Sunday's game was the first of a home-and-home with San Jose, and the two teams meet again next Sunday at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Thermo Fisher to buy Life Tech for $13.6 billion

By Bill Berkrot and Susan Kelly

(Reuters) - Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc on Monday agreed to buy Life Technologies Corp for $13.6 billion in a deal that would make it one of the top companies in the hot field of genetic testing.

The pact values Life Tech at $76 per share, a 12 percent premium, and is one of the year's biggest corporate takeovers.

The deal would catapult Thermo, the world's largest maker of scientific and laboratory equipment, to the forefront of the fledgling field of personalized medicine, in which research is uncovering the hereditary underpinnings of diseases to better tailor treatments to patients.

"Genetic sequencing is an area that will become increasingly important over the years in terms of specialty diagnostics, and Thermo needs to compete in that market because they have a number of products in that area that ultimately could get displaced by sequencing applications," said Macquarie Capital analyst Jonathan Groberg.

Thermo Chief Executive Marc Casper said advanced genetic testing was an important field going forward, and his company wanted to get into it as an industry leader.

"We didn't want to be a more distant participant, and this transaction facilitated us having a stronger position there. Today there are two industry leaders, Life Technologies being one of them," Casper said in a telephone interview.

On a call with analysts, Casper acknowledged that Life Tech is No. 2 behind Illumina Inc on next-generation gene sequencing, but he said Life Tech has been gaining market share and has a promising pipeline of products in development.

Illumina last year turned down a $6.8 billion hostile takeover offer from Swiss drugmaker Roche Holding AG that demonstrated the appeal of gene-sequencing technology.

SHARES OF BOTH COMPANIES RISE

While the agreed price for Life Tech was at the high end of analysts' expectations, and large acquisitions typically drive down the share price of the acquirer, Thermo said the deal would add 90 cents to $1 to its per-share profit in the first full year, sending its shares higher. After jumping nearly 6 percent, the shares were up 1.1 percent at $80.45 in afternoon trade on the New York Stock Exchange.

The offer represents a premium of about 12 percent to Life Tech's market close on Friday. Life Tech shares were up 7.5 percent at $73.11, below the offer price.

The combined company would have 2013 revenue of about $17 billion, according to analysts' estimates. The acquisition will also enhance Thermo's offerings in the fast growing field of food safety, and its ability to grow in China and other emerging markets.

"The combined company has significant scale in emerging markets and scale makes a huge difference there," said Casper, adding that the combination of the two companies "will put us in even better position to grow in the fastest growing regions in the world."

The acquisition is by far the biggest deal for Thermo since the company was created in the $12.8 billion merger of Thermo Electron and Fisher Scientific International in 2006. It is also far larger than the biggest previous deal on Casper's watch - the $3.5 billion acquisition of Phadia in 2011.

"We obviously had a good track record and a strong methodology to successfully integrate businesses," Casper said. "We feel comfortable in our ability to execute this successfully."

Thermo expects the transaction to close early in 2014, pending U.S. regulatory and shareholder approvals.

Thermo will assume Life Tech's net debt of about $2.2 billion. In the third year following the deal's closing, Thermo said it expects to achieve cost savings of $250 million by consolidating facilities and support functions.

Thermo's products range from basic scientific instruments, such as test tubes, to advanced mass spectrometry equipment used to determine the chemical structure of molecules. It also sells chemicals, agents and antibodies used in the manufacture and research of biotech medicine - a line that will be complemented by Life Tech's product lines - and in recent years has increased its portfolio of products for testing air and water quality and food safety.

LIFE TECH EXPLORED MANY OPTIONS

Life Tech explored a sale after previous attempts by Chief Executive Gregory Lucier to boost the value of the company's stock and capture more market share from Illumina.

Lucier said the company explored many options during a lengthy strategic review, with the ultimate sale of the company always one of them. "We are very satisfied both with the process and the outcome," he said in a telephone interview.

Life Tech President and Chief Operating Officer Mark Stevenson is expected to play a significant role in the combined company, the companies said.

Lucier oversaw the merger of his former company Invitrogen and Applied Biosystems that created Life Tech.

"It's been an honor to work with a team of people that created a company that ultimately Thermo Fisher thought highly enough to pay over $13 billion for," Lucier said.

Thermo has obtained committed bridge financing from JPMorgan and Barclays, which also acted as the company's financial advisers.

Russia tells North Korea not to provoke more tensions

By Alan Baldwin SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Lewis Hamilton went from sick to quick at the Chinese Grand Prix on Friday only to find his tires were falling apart. The two free practice sessions marked the season debut of Pirelli's quick-wearing soft tires and, while Ferrari's Felipe Massa and Lotus found them to their liking, Hamilton was of the opposite opinion. "My tire was the worst I've ever experienced. There were bits flying off it all over the place. It didn't last long," said the Mercedes driver, who had retired to his hotel with an allergy on Thursday. ...

Trayvon Martin's family settles wrongful death claim: report

By Barbara Liston

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - The family of black teenager Trayvon Martin, who was shot to death last year by a neighborhood watch captain, has settled a wrongful death claim against the homeowners association of the Florida gated community where he was killed, a Florida newspaper reported on Friday.

Benjamin Crump, an attorney for the Martin family, filed paperwork outlining the settlement, which is thought to be more than $1 million, at a courthouse in Sanford, Florida, according to the Orlando Sentinel newspaper. Crump did not return calls for comment.

A spokesman for the lawyer of homeowners association told Reuters he had no comment.

George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch captain, goes on trial June 10 for second-degree murder for Martin's killing.

Representatives of The Retreat at Twin Lakes subdivision at one point in the negotiations offered the Martin family a $1 million settlement, Shawn Vincent, a spokesman for Zimmerman's defense team, told Reuters.

The Sentinel reported on Friday that the settlement amount was crossed out of paperwork filed at the Seminole County Courthouse. Later in the day, the document appeared to have been withdrawn from public view.

Although a cover page indicated copies of the settlement were given to Zimmerman's lawyer and the judge presiding over the criminal trial, Vincent told Reuters that the defense team did not receive its copy.

Martin died on his way back to a townhouse where he was spending the week with his father. Prosecutors contend Zimmerman profiled Martin, a black 17-year-old, then pursued Martin against the advice of police and shot him during an altercation.

Zimmerman claims he shot Martin in self-defense.

Rep. Peter King Compares North Korean Government to 'Organized Crime Family'

abc peter king this week jt 130331 wblog Rep. Peter King Compares North Korean Government to Organized Crime Family

Below you can find some of the notable comments made Sunday on "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." Political roundtable guests included former Newark Mayor Cory Booker, D-N.J.; Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y.; ABC News political analyst and special correspondent Matthew Dowd; ABC News senior Washington correspondent Jeff Zeleny; and editor and publisher of The Nation Katrina vanden Heuvel. Our special religion and politics roundtable included writer and religious scholar Reza Aslan; Rev. Calvin Butts, Pastor of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York; author and atheist Susan Jacoby; Dr. Richard Land, of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission; and Sojourners president Rev. Jim Wallis, author of "On God's Side."

King describes North Korean government as 'organized crime family'

KING: As far as I see, this is not even government. It's more like an organized crime family running a territory. They are brutal, he is brutal, his father was brutal, his grandfather was brutal. I don't see any purpose at all in [direct talks with North Korea] at all. It would demoralize our allies in Asia, certainly in South Korea, and it would - to me - serve no constructive purpose whatsoever.

Vanden Heuvel on gay marriage: 'justice delayed is justice denied'

VANDEN HEUVEL: "Justice delayed is justice denied. But I think that the Supreme Court is lagging so far behind now that marriage equality has won in this country? It is moving in states, it is moving politically. And I think you've seen, perhaps, the most rapid mass evolution on an issue, among our politicos as well. They know where the future of this country is. It is also a qualifier to win a next generation."

So I think whatever happens in the court, and it may well be that Kennedy's - Justice Kennedy's consuming affection for state rights does lead to overruling DOMA, I think we are going to see a social, moral, and political paradigm shift that is extraordinary.

King supports President Obama's position on guns

KING: Let me say, I support the president's position on guns. So I'll say that. Having said that, it's going to be very difficult to get very meaningful legislation through the congress, because despite what [Mayor Booker] was saying? is that you get a majority of Americans who don't seem to want this type of legislation. And I support it. So I'm - I am again, supporting legislation on gun trafficking, on background checks, assault weapons, all of that. But I just don't see the intensity building up.

Vanden Heuvel states 'the Republican Party is a values challenged party'

VANDEN HEUVEL: If they don't go along with immigration. I mean, as you head into 2014, the Republican Party is a values challenged party. They have big problems on immigration, on same-sex marriage, on gun reform, commonsense gun reform. So I think this is going to be a test case

Land thinks immigration reform 'needs to be done'

LAND: "Immigration reform is tearing the social fabric of the country. It needs to be done. The lack of doing it is causing havoc that will be difficult to repair in the social fabric of the country. And there is a way to do it, and a way to do it that's fair, and a way to do it that will heal the country."
