Fans of the Duggar Family have followed the lives and adventures of parents Michelle and Jim Bob and their 19 children for a number of years now. They?ve seen the family through happy times (their oldest son?s wedding and the birth of his children) and heartache (the miscarriage of daughter Jubilee).
Viewers also know the roller-coaster of joy and anxiety the family has ridden over the last two years with their youngest child, Josie. Born at 25 weeks gestation, she weighed just one pound and six ounces at birth and struggled with digestive and breathing problems. Doctors weren?t sure she would live to see her first birthday.
But with excellent medical care, the love of her family, and ? as the Duggars would be quick to remind you ? lots of prayer, little Josie is doing wonderfully. Now two and a half (she?ll be three in December), she?s still small for her age but doing wonderfully. Michelle reports in her weekly TLC blog, ?She is probably my strongest toddler I?ve ever had ? both in physical strength and determination.?
Now, she reports, Josie has passed another milestone of sorts.
When she was? younger, the littlest Duggar had to sleep with an oxygen monitor at night because of lingering issues with breathing problems and ear infections. But ever since having tubes inserted in her ears last year, she?s been breathing easier and made it through flu season without getting sick. Two weeks ago, Michelle returned the monitor to the hospital. ?[N]ow it feels like I?m giving up my security blanket,? she admits.
As with most preemies, Josie is catching up to her developmental milestones a little later than a full-term child, but she has no physical or mental disabilities. In fact, she may even be a bit of a musical prodigy. Michelle says that during their music time at home, ?Josie just catches it instantly. She?ll sing all the songs we?re singing word-perfect and keep the pitch and everything just right.?
Michelle uses their experience as an example when she talks to other mothers of premature children who are worried about their babies? development, though she acknowledges that ?each child will have different struggles.?
But it sounds as though little Josie is more than up to whatever challenges she still has to face. Her mom calls her a ?spitfire? and a ?big personality in a small package!?
