With all the news about Tom and Katie?s break-up, it got me thinking? Yes, celebrity has its perks, but when it comes to relationships, celebrities may actually be at a disadvantage.
Sex, Drugs, & Rock?nRoll
If you?ve ever watched HBO?s Entourage, you get a sense of just how much temptation is really out there for celebrities. Sex, drugs and pretty much whatever you?want is instantly available.
But, that?s not the kind of environment that?s conducive to meeting a quality person. Meeting someone you could have a real relationship with requires an investment of time and energy. It?s a give-and-take; not something you order up like room service.
The Bachelor
When it comes to dating, think the opposite of The Bachelor. You don?t want high intensity, highly romantic, high adrenaline dates.? You want low-key dates, according to Andy Whaling (Sunday Night Singles, 2001). Otherwise, how do you know if you?re falling in love with the person or if you?re just high off the date.
So, if you?re a celebrity ? How do you ever know if someone is really falling for you? Or if they?re just interested in your money, fame, and power?
Life in the Spotlight
People magazine is one of my guilty pleasures. But, I also realize it contributes to the paparazzi machine and the complete lack of privacy for celebrities.
When everything is broadcast for the whole world to see, it interferes with the natural ebb and flow of getting to know each other. And it accelerates the gradual process of merging your friends, your lives, and your worlds. And when it comes to relationships ? faster is usually not better. Because it takes time to really get to know and love someone.
Plus, every relationship has it?s bumps and rough patches. But, when normal relationship issues are constantly scrutinized and publicly discussed, everything gets blown out of proportion. Not to mention, when things are taken out of context or there are outright lies.
Big Personalities
There?s no denying that celebrities have big personalities. So, two celebrities in a relationship means twice the drama and twice the spotlight.
The alternative would be dating someone who?s not in the industry. But, that also has its challenges, especially for the person who?s not used to the spotlight. Plus, it would make it harder?to really ?get? what the other person is?going through.
What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas
I?ve heard, filming?on location is like being in a time-warp or bubble. Everyone?s far from home and separated from their loved-ones. Sometimes for months on end. The days are long. And the work is hard. Not to mention love-scenes, which complicate things on a whole other level.
It all creates a ?What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas? ?mindset. It?s like being on vacation from your relationship, which is never a good idea.
According to Louann Brizendine (The Female Brain, 2006), real relationships require daily closeness and physical contact to keep your attachment hormones flowing. Men especially need regular physical contact to stay connected. Without that regular contact, you actually go through withdrawals from the feel-good hormones that love releases in your brain.
How Do They Do It?
There are celebrity couples that seem to have found a way to make it all work. There was Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. There?s Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson. Plus, Stephen Spielberg and Kate Capshaw. Hmmm? those are the main ones I can think of right now. Oh yea, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett! (But, not sure what?s really going on with them lately?)
But, they?re out there. Celebrity couples who?ve made it work. They just seem to be the exception more than the rule. So, maybe the real question isn?t, ?Why celebrity relationships don?t last?? But, when they do last, ?How do they do it??
